Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

--Israeli Foreign Minister, Ariel Sharon, is increasingly showing signs of a serious disorder that afflicts Israeli officials at election time.

--The symptoms of this affliction include confusing wishful-thinking with reality and subjecting policy to ideology as evidenced by Sharon's famous declaration that Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land "contribute to peace."

--This statement is almost as outrageous as his previous denial of UN Resolution 181 (which forms the legal foundation for the establishment of the state of Israel) and its applicability to Jerusalem.

--If self-negation is the prevailing "wisdom" among Israeli official circles, then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the undisputed master of that approach.

--By blurring the divide between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, and by persistently refusing the two-state solution (i.e. the partition of historical Palestine into the neighboring states of Palestine and Israel), he is preparing for the de facto future outcome of creating a binational state. In such a state, demographics will come into play as the determining factor. Thus Zionism, taken to an extreme, will bring about its own demise.

--In this context, the illegal Israeli settlements and unilateral annexation of Jerusalem, along with the willful rejection of international law, are a lethal combination for the current peace process since they contradict its terms of reference and its objectives as well as the signed agreements.

--It does not take a brilliant mind to grasp that the current status quo is not only untenable, but also extremely volatile-given the provocative nature of Israeli pronouncements and measures. Nor is it difficult to comprehend that the extremist Israeli mentality and policies of occupation, victimization, and intimidation do not create an atmosphere of confidence or a partnership of peace.

--While Sharon, Netanyahu, and their ilk are escalating the rhetoric and settlement activities in the feverish pitch of the Israeli elections campaign, it is clear that they have lost sight of the imperatives of peace.

--The irony is that while they are frantically denying the realities and rights of "the other"-i.e. the Palestinian side, they are negating the very foundations of their own ideology that they have stretched beyond its viable limits.
