Your Key to Palestine

(Ma’an Mews Agency): Palestinian sources have confirmed that Damascus-based Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mesh’al will be arriving in Cairo very shortly to hold talks with senior Egyptian officials concerning 2 key issues; namely the release of Israeli Corporal Gil’ad Shalit, arrested by Palestinian activists in the Gaza Strip last June, and efforts to narrow the gap between Hamas and Fateh, after months of increased hostilities between the two factions.

It was also confirmed that Hamas is increasingly leaning towards agreement over the formation of a Palestinian national unity government for a period of one year, during which legislative and presidential elections would be held.

Meanwhile, Iranian news sources reported that the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has expressed alarm that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas may bypass the government by pursuing the holding of early legislative and presidential elections, the outcome of which may place Hamas in a very difficult position. The same sources also confirmed that a deal on Shalit’s release is almost final, and that Israeli security authorities have recently received a new version of the agreement, to which they are due to respond in the coming hours.

Since Hamas rose to power following last January’s elections, hence the formation of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, a US-led international diplomatic and economic boycott has left the occupied Palestinian territories in a state of extreme poverty and insecurity. Tensions between Fateh and Hamas have also led to the killing of dozens of Palestinians in clashes between loyalists to both movements.

It is estimated by United Nations sources that almost 75% of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip are currently living under the poverty line of US$ 2/day. Many observers have warned against the complete collapse of the socio-economic structure of the Palestinian territories, unless international financial assistance is unblocked to the Palestinian Authority.

The internal security situation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has also sharply deteriorated in the past few months, particularly following the formation of a Hamas-loyal security force of 5,700 men in the Gaza Strip, which is widely viewed as a violation of Palestinian Basic Law (the constitution), and a blatant attempt by the Islamist group to create a force of deterrence against the Fateh-loyal Palestinian security apparatus established under the provisions of the Oslo Agreement. Recent statements by Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Al Zahhar (Hamas), that there are serious efforts aimed at expanding this Executive Force to 10,000 men, including thousands of news recruits in the West Bank, has kept the looming threat of potential internal strife an evident possibility.
