Twenty Palestinians were killed this morning in Israeli artillery fire in Beit Hanoun. According to the Israeli army, the artillery battery, which contained 12 shells, hit a row of seven houses in the southern Gaza Strip town, killing and injuring scores of sleeping men, women and children.

The attack came just one day after Israel declared an end to Operation Autumn Clouds, the week-long military operation which claimed the lives of over 60 Palestinians, injuring hundreds and leaving behind a path of destruction through the town’s infrastructure and land. Israeli forces earlier redeployed to the outskirts of the town after having entered it last Wednesday, ostensibly to crack down on Palestinian groups responsible for shooting rockets into Israel.

Wednesday’s attack, which has been described by President Abbas as a “horrible massacre” has left 11 members of the Athamneh family dead including one-year old Dima Athamneh. A state of emergency was declared in the Al Awda, Kamal Udwan and Shifa’ Hospitals following the massacre as scores of killed and injured Palestinians were rushed in.

On Tuesday, before Israeli troops withdrew from Beit Hanoun, they killed eight more Palestinians and tore up the town’s infrastructure, homes and buildings.

Also, Wednesday morning, Israeli troops ambushed a home in the Jenin-area town of Yamoun, firing shells at it and killing three members of the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Two other Yamoun residents were also killed in the shooting.

President Abbas announced a three-day mourning period for the martyrs of Beit Hanoun during an emergency meeting of the Palestinian cabinet Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh also called on the Arab League to convene and push to “break the siege on the Palestinians” by “breaking the Arab silence.”

Haniyeh warned that Israel’s attempt at “bringing the Palestinians to their knees” would fail, vowing that the Palestinians would never relinquish their legitimate rights or abandon their right to resistance. Haniyeh also called on the UN Security Council to immediately convene and halt Israeli massacres in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Hamas leader Sheikh Nizar Rayan called for the resumption of suicide bombings against Israeli targets in response to the Beit Hanoun killings this morning and that more Israeli soldiers should be kidnapped to make Israel pay heavily for its crimes.

Following the Beit Hanoun killings, thousands of Gazans took to the streets throughout the Strip, condemning the massacre, vowing revenge, and calling on the international community to take an active role in stopping Israeli crimes against the Palestinians. Schools have been suspended for the day in Gaza in mourning of the victims and calls for blood are being made from the Strip’s minarets.
