Palestinian sources have confirmed that the Israeli army killed one Palestinian civilian and arrested 17 others across the West Bank, threatening to end a fragile truce declared between Israel and Palestinian factions just over a week ago.

Shortly after nightfall on Monday, 4 December, Israeli troops opened fire at two Palestinians in a restaurant in the West Bank town of Tulkarem, killing one of them and arresting the other, who had been pursued for arrest.

A local Hamas spokesperson, known as Abu Obeideh, said he “…wouldn't rule out ending the cease-fire in a few short days if the enemy continues like this," reaffirming Palestinian concerns that the Gaza ceasefire, which does not include the West Bank, cannot be sustained if Israeli troops continue to target Palestinians across the occupied territories.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli troops had arrested 16 Palestinians across the West Bank; the arrests are viewed by Palestinian factions as an indirect violation of the ceasefire and a clear indication of Israel’s lack of will to honour its obligations under the agreement.

Meanwhile, the truce in the Gaza Strip is holding, albeit under the constant threat of collapse at any moment, given the continued hostility in the West Bank.
