Three schoolchildren, all from the same family, were killed this morning (Monday, December 11) when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a car carrying the children of senior intelligence chief Baha’ Balousheh on their way to school. Three of his children – Osama, Ahmad and Islam – all between the ages of six and nine, were killed in addition to 25-year-old Mahmoud Al Habil, one of Balusha’s bodyguards. Another bodyguard, Ayman Al Ghoul, was also seriously injured, as were four children in the vicinity of the shooting.

The incident, which occurred early this morning while Gaza city children were on their way to school, was the worst incident of infighting so far. According to eyewitnesses, three cars intercepted Balousheh’s car in the Rimal quarter after which gunmen shot around 60 bullets at the car before fleeing the scene, which is the location of nine schools.

Balousheh, a longtime Fateh loyalist and head of coordination between security forces in the Palestinian General Intelligence Agency, was not in the area at the time of the attack.

Hours after the attack, Fateh Legislative Council member Abdul Hamid Al Ayleh called on PLC members to hand in their collective resignations, saying they had “failed miserably in providing security.”

The children’s deaths come two days after another incident in which the convoy of Interior Minister Said Siyam was shot at. No one was injured in the attack and the perpetrators were later arrested.

The escalating internal violence comes in tandem with the heightened political crisis. The Hamas-led government called yesterday on President Abbas to return to national unity government negotiations after the latter, following a meeting of the PLO’s Executive Committee, announced that he would order early presidential and legislative elections and dissolve the Legislative Council. While Abbas has said he maintains the authority to take such measures, the government insists Abbas is acting outside of the law, adding that such announcements would only lead to further chaos.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Jihad strongly condemned the shooting deaths of the four civilians this morning, accusing the perpetrators of being “collaborators” with the occupation.

Islamic Jihad leader Khaled Al Batsh said in a leaflet distributed earlier that the gunmen were “mercenaries and not freedom fighters who want to transform the battle into an internal one in the service of the Israeli occupation.”

Hamas spokesperson Ashraf Abu Dayah also condemned the incident, saying “tainted hands” were responsible for the killings with the goal of causing chaos among the Palestinians.

Both parties called on the government and interior ministry to pursue the culprits and bring them to justice.
