Palestinian gunmen shot and killed a Colonel with the Preventive Security apparatus in the Gaza Strip, threatening to escalate an already volatile situation in the Palestinian territories. Col. Mohammed Ghayeb was killed as his home came under heavy fire Thursday. His wife and 8 children on the scene were injured in the attack; another 28 people were also injured, while 6 of Col. Ghayeb’s bodyguards were also killed.

On Friday, a Muslim cleric was assassinated as he left the mosque where he had just delivered the Friday prayers sermon. Accusations were exchanged between Fateh and Hamas, who denied the killing.

At the end of two bloody days in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyyeh agreed to a truce, but little is expected to change in light of increasing factional tensions.

In earlier events, the Israeli army raided the West Bank town of Ramallah on Thursday, killing 4 men and inflicting heavy material damage to private property and businesses. The army stated that it had intended to capture wanted Palestinian activists, but that when their undercover forces were identified, the Israeli army decided to send in reinforcements to save the undercover unit. This created mayhem on Al Manarah, Ramallah’s city center, where dozens of shopkeepers and customers were locked in shuttered stores for hours before the army cleared the area and people were able to leave, according to witnesses.

People who were unable to escape, and those who assembled on Al Manarah, came under Israeli gun fire and tear gas, and 4 young men were killed in the ensuing violence. According to witnesses, the Israeli artillery bulldozed dozens of cars parked on the main street in order to make way for their “rescue operation.” Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the attack and demanded that damages be paid. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert later issued an apology for the loss of innocent life, but justified the raid as necessary in order to capture a wanted man allegedly known to have instigated several attacks against Israeli targets.
