Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

In the joint press conference held yesterday in Ramallah, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said they both opposed a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that would entail a Palestinian state being established within temporary borders. "We do not consider this possibility a realistic one that we can build on," Abbas said.

Rice, who is currently on a shuttle visit to the region and who met with Abbas at his headquarters, said the United States was interested in speeding along the peace process and implementing the long-dormant roadmap. Rice also said her country would do whatever necessary to endorse President Abbas in his efforts to restart negotiations and bring about a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Rice is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Monday morning to discuss jumpstarting negotiations with the Palestinians in accordance with the roadmap. According to Israeli media reports, Olmert is expected to tell Rice that Israel is willing to take “unprecedented steps” towards the Palestinians if they adhere to the Quartet Committee preconditions, i.e. recognizing and accepting Israel, respecting previous agreements and renouncing violence. Israel also said that if a Palestinian national unity government is formed that does not adhere to the Quartet’s conditions, this would mark the end to Israel’s efforts to “support” of Abbas.

Meanwhile, the Israeli settlements watchdog, Peace Now, announced that, in direct defiance of the roadmap, the Israeli government just issued a tender for the construction of 44 housing units in the east Jerusalem settlement of Ma’aleh Adumim. The United States has repeatedly said it believes Israel’s West Bank settlements constitute a major obstacle to achieving peace.
