Fifteen Palestinians have been killed over the past 24 hours in the worst infighting between Hamas and Fateh so far. While the two movements convened an emergency meeting that included Hamas-affiliated Interior Minister Sa’id Siyam, to try and hammer out a quick ceasefire, by Saturday morning, it was apparent that the truce had not stuck. Incoming media reports from Gaza confirmed the inter-factional fighting had continued throughout the night and into the morning hours with no sign of letting up.

The most recent eruption of factional violence began on Thursday night after a member from the Hamas-affiliated Executive Force was killed in his vehicle. According to Hamas sources, a roadside bomb detonated under the passing jeep, killing Husam Abu Muteir from the Hamas-constructed armed force under the command of the Interior Ministry. Other, conflicting, reports stated that the jeep itself was transporting explosives, which accidentally detonated. Several others, including two children, were injured in the incident as well. Hamas immediately accused Fateh for the bombing, saying they would avenge their dead. Fateh has denied any involvement in the incident.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control after that. The bombing coincided with Hamas-organized rallies marking the first anniversary of Hamas’ victory in the Palestinian Legislative Council elections last January, which led to their subsequent forming of the government. The two sides clashed, leaving several dead from both sides including two-year-old Yehya Abu Bakr in Khan Younis.

Early on Friday, members of the Executive Force also surrounded the Jabaliya home of Mansour Shalayel, a senior member of the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fateh, accusing him of shooting at Hamas operatives. Kidnappings from both sides ensued, including the kidnapping of eight Hamas members in Nablus. The kidnappers maintained that the captives would not be released until Shalayel’s safety was ensured.

While the standoff around Shalayel’s house lasted several hours, during which two people were killed and RBGs and several shots were fired, it ended later on in the day, with both the Executive Force and the Palestinian Authority security forces retreating. The damage, however, was already done. Hamas announced later on in the evening that it was suspending all national unity government talks, saying it would not negotiate with “killers.” On its part, Fateh also said it would not continue talks with Hamas after the deadly current events.

While both sides are calling for a halt to the bloodletting, including parties not directly involved in the violence such as the Islamic Jihad, whose statement read, “…all of our weapons should be united against the Zionist occupier,” accusations are still flying between the two. While the Interior Ministry said its Executive Force was merely “defending itself,” Fateh has claimed that Hamas bears full responsibility for the confrontations, pointing to the so-called “crazy vigilantism practiced by the bloody trend in Hamas.”

While talks are currently suspended, Fateh representative to the national unity government talks in Gaza, Ibrahi Abul Naja, said he hoped discussions between the two sides would resume by Sunday.

Meanwhile the clashes continued unabated on Saturday. Latest media reports have confirmed that two people have been killed and three injured in armed confrontations around the Islamic University in Gaza City.
