In the past 24 hours, five people have been killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of gun battles between two families. This morning, 70-year-old Ismail Subuh and 30-year-old Hazem Kaware died and 15 others were injured in clashes between the Kuaware and Ghalban families in Khan Younis. Several homes were also severely damaged in the fighting.

The armed confrontations this morning followed clashes yesterday that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Mohammed Ali Ghalban, a member of Hamas’ Izzedin Al Qassam Brigades. His family and the movement claim he was killed by members of the Kuware family. Two others were also killed yesterday in the infighting.

According to security sources, members of the Qassam Brigades besieged the Kuware homes, firing shots and shells at them. Apparently, when the brigades entered the neighborhood, armed clashes then immediately broke out between the two sides.

For their part, the Kuware family insists they had nothing to do with the death of Mohammed Ghalban, the Izzedin Al Qassam member killed yesterday, which Hamas claims ignited the feud. On the contrary, the Kuware family says the Qassam Brigades ambushed the taxicab of Hazem Kuware, shooting him at point blank range. Those in the cab with him were also injured.

The sudden resurgence of infighting comes after a lull of a few weeks following the signing of the Mecca Agreement earlier this month between Hamas and Fateh. Both factions agreed on an end to the internal strife, which has claimed hundreds of Palestinian lives and almost completely shattered any chances of reconciliation and unity between the two sides.

Also today, according to the Maan news agency, unidentified gunmen fired shots and detonated explosives at the home of Suleiman Khader, a National Security commander in Gaza City. Two people inside the house were reportedly injured after a fire broke out in the house caused by the explosives. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
