Israeli military forces raided the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday in a major military operation dubbed “Winter Heat,” said to be the largest army operation in the past year. Under cover of 120 army vehicles and helicopters, Israeli forces raided the city at 1:00 in the morning, imposing a curfew on Nablus’ old city, confining tens of thousands of residents to their homes.

The troops proceeded to divide the city into two sections and carry out house-to-house raids, even surrounding the Rafidiya and National Hospitals and conducting security checks of all medical personnel entering or exiting the hospitals. Israeli forces took over several rooftops and turned a number of homes into military encampments, setting up dirt and cement barricades on the main roads to prevent any movement. Dozens of residents have been arrested, especially in the Qasariya, Sheikh Muslim, Habla and Yasminiyia quarters.

Violent confrontations also broke out throughout the city between Israeli troops and Palestinian resistance fighters. At least ten people were wounded in the clashes in addition to two Israeli soldiers. The army, which distributed flyers among the residents warning them of cooperating with the resistance, said their declared objectives were to arrest seven activists and to uncover so-called bomb factories in the city. Israeli forces even interrupted normal television and radio broadcasts to call on the residents to stock up on food supplies because the operation would last several days.

Last night, Israeli forces blew up the home of Bassem Abu Sariyeh, Aqsa Martyrs Brigades commander in Nablus, which also caused considerable damage to neighboring houses. Abu Sariyeh has been wanted by Israeli security services for the past seven years.

Also this morning, invading troops arrested Sheikh Nabegh Bureeq after raiding and searching his Sanabel radio station in the old city at 3:30 in the morning, confiscating several pieces of broadcasting equipment.

Troops also occupied the Jamal Abdul Nasser School near the old city, turning into an interrogation center. According to sources inside Nablus, several dozens of citizens were taken to the school and grilled for information about the wanted activists, mostly members of the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

Furthermore, the International Women’s Peace Service reported that yesterday evening, a Palestinian man in Nablus’ old city was being used as a human shield for eight Israeli soldiers walking through the streets during curfew.

The Israeli army, which is still in the city, said its operation is expected to last several more days until its objectives are reached. The Israeli army has even set up a hot line for residents to call in for any information on the wanted Palestinians. Leading activists in the city have called on the people to remain steadfast and not to heed the army’s warning, also refuting Israeli claims that leading activists have been arrested. Several street fights have continued to erupt around the clock between invading Israeli troops and Palestinian activists.
