Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Arab parties represented in the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) have declared a state of emergency after the defamation campaign against head of the National Democratic Assembly, Azmi Bishara heated up over the past several weeks.

Bishara, who is currently outside the county, reportedly visiting Qatar along with other Arab countries, has been the object of much Israeli criticism and slander by Israeli government figures and media. The Arab parliamentarian has been charged with several accusations although a gag order has been issued against disclosure of any information on the investigation opened by the Israeli intelligence service, which claims details can not be divulged because of the “security” nature of the charges against him.

Over the past several weeks, rumors have been rampant in the Israeli press over what Bishara is actually been charged with. While media reports have claimed Bishara has given information to “enemy parties” during times of war, that he has received amounts of money from unknown sources and that he is planning to seek political asylum in Qatar. There were even reports that Bishara was asked to leave Jordan where he was giving a lecture to Jordanian writers.

Bishara, a Palestinian-Israeli, who has been a member of Knesset for the past 11 years, is known for his outspoken opinions on the injustices suffered by the Arab minority in Israel and the discriminatory nature of Israel. He was been criticized more than once by Israeli MKs because of his visits to Syria and Lebanon, which are categorized by Israel as enemy states. Right-wing MKs have even suggested that Arab members such as Bishara should have their citizenship revoked because of their “disloyalty” to the state.

Bishara, however, has denied all of these charges, saying they are fabricated and baseless. Still, Bishara did confirm that he planned to resign from parliament after his 11-year stint, saying this was not a result of the current campaign against him but because of a shift in priorities. He also said he had “exhausted all the parliamentary tools at his disposal.” Bishara maintained he now wanted to dedicate more time to writing and working on Arab issues.

However, even though Bishara intends to resign from political life, he has made it clear that he will not remain silent. In response to the current campaign being waged by the Israeli government and intelligence services, Bishara said, “Israel would not be able to handle the challenge I've presented on the issue of its Jewishness and the position of Zionism here.”

The other Arab parties represented in the Knesset have pledged solidarity with Bishara, saying his battle is all of their battles. They also said they were devising a strategy to confront any problems they might encounter once Bishara returns to the country. They also said they would work together if Israeli authorities decided to ban him from returning.
