Unidentified arsonists set fire on May 8 to Al Imdad Charitable Society in the Rafah Refugee Camp, completely destroying it. The organization is affiliated with the Salafi group, responsible for opening fire on May 6 on the UNRWA-run Omariya School festival in Rafah, killing Suleiman Al Shaer, the bodyguard of PLC member Majed Abu Shamaleh. Six children were also wounded in the attack.

The Rafah children were part of an UNRWA-sponsored activity in cooperation with Palestinian civil societies called “Summer Gym”, which involves 250,000 children between the ages of six and 15. The camp offers a variety of academic and extra-curricular activities for children who mostly live in impoverished areas of Gaza.

The Salafi group, known for its extremely restrictive interpretation of Islam, stormed the school, opening fire on the participants under the premise that the activities were “un-Islamic”, namely because the activities involved both boys and girls, even though the tents set up for the children were gender-segregated in order to avoid offending social and religious sensitivities.

The group also threatened to close down any summer camps set up by UNRWA, accusing the agency of trying to force western values on Palestinian, Muslim society. The Salafi group has also been linked to attacks on internet cafes and beauty salons in the Gaza Strip, claiming these places encourage blasphemy and teach people corrupt values.

Members of the Salafi group apparently began pelting the participants of the festival with stones and empty bottles as the invitees were making their way out of the school. According to eyewitnesses, between 30 and 50 Salafi loyalists began attacking the festival, which later escalated into gunshots and hand grenades.

Palestinians from all walks of life are viewing this incident with grave concern, given that the group is seemingly exploiting religious values in order to further its own agenda. Palestinian security forces announced that five people have been arrested in connection to Sunday’s shooting at Al Omariya but whose names have not yet been released.

This morning’s attack on Al Imdad Society may spark yet more internal violence if the situation is not brought under control, especially since the Gaza Strip is preparing itself for a possible major Israeli incursion into its territories. Israel has repeatedly threatened to enter the Strip if Palestinian rockets continued to fall on Israeli areas and has upped the ante after a rocket fired into Sderot caused minimal damage several days ago.
