Israeli helicopter gunships continued to pound the Gaza Strip for the second week in a row, killing another two Hamas activists from the Izzedin Al Qassam Brigades and firing missiles for the second time in an area close to the home of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. Six people have so far been reported wounded in Saturday morning’s attacks. Israel says the operation will continue as long as Qassam rockets continue to fly into Israeli territory. According to Israeli sources, six rockets fell on Israeli territory throughout Friday. While Israeli authorities reported minimal property damage and the treatment of some 10 Sderot residents for shock, no injuries were reported from the Qassam attacks. Last week one Israeli woman died from a rocket attack, but no other serious injuries have been reported.

Over the weekend, a 28-year-old fisherman was killed in gunfire shot from an Israeli navy vessel off the Gaza coast along with a 40-year-old woman who died from wounds sustained last week.

On Thursday, Israeli occupation authorities made sweeping arrests in the West Bank, taking 33 Hamas activists into custody including ministers, PLC members and mayors. Among those arrested were Minister of Education, Nasser Eddin Al Shaer, four mayors and three members of the PLC. Furthermore, at 1:30 am on Saturday morning, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian state minister Wasfi Qubaha from his home in Jenin.

Israel said the arrests were part of the ongoing campaign against Hamas in a bid to halt the rockets being fired into Israel. It said those arrested, including the lawmakers, openly supported the rockets and that their detention would be a strong message to Hamas’ military wing.

Meanwhile, United States National Security spokesperson Gordon Johndroe expressed his country’s concern over the detention of Hamas officials, but defended Israel’s right to defend itself against the rocket attacks. The European Union also expressed its concern with the loss of innocent lives, calling on the Palestinian government to exert the utmost pressure to force Hamas into halting the Qassams. It also called on Israel to try and avoid civilian causalities in its military operation in the Strip.

In its operations, Israel has not only targeted Hamas activists, but it has bombed Hamas-run executive committee facilities, warehouses and homes along with the economic infrastructure such as destroying money-changer offices.

Furthermore, representatives from Hamas and Fateh were forced to postpone their meeting scheduled to take place on Thursday due to the ongoing Israeli attacks. Hamas officials have taken precautionary measures in the wake of Israel’s military campaign, which made it impossible for the two sides to come together. The meeting was part of a concerted effort from both sides to quell the internal disputes and infighting that has raged on for months and has claimed scores of lives.
