Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Yesterday, the Israeli government transferred NIS500 million ($118 million) to the new Palestinian emergency government in a “goodwill gesture” to show their support for the Abbas-backed government. Israel has held the Palestinian tax revenues and refused to release them for over a year and a half. Israeli officials have announced that the government will transfer the remaining amount over the next six months, which Palestinians estimate to be $600-700 million. Israeli officials put this number at closer to $400 million after deducting the back payments the PA owes Israel. In releasing the money to the emergency government, Israel is attempting to starve out the Hamas government in Gaza while pumping up Fayyad’s government in the West Bank.

As a result, the new government is expected to pay the full salaries of PA civil servants, something which has not happened in 18 months.

Meanwhile, Israel continued to crack down on Palestinian resistance groups in the West Bank and Gaza. Occupation troops killed three members of Al Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad in Al Maghazi Refugee Camp in central Gaza. A day earlier, Israeli troops killed three members of Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in a missile attack.

In the early dawn hours, Israeli troops raided the Jenin Refugee Camp and shot dead Aqsa Martyrs Brigades field commander 24-year-old Mohammed Abul Hayja’. According to eyewitnesses, at least eight Israeli army vehicles stormed the camp and opened fire at Palestinian fighters trying to push the troops back. Abul Hayja’ was killed in the crossfire. Israeli intelligence sources say the Asqa Martyrs’ leader was on Israel’s wanted list and is second in command only to Zakariya Zubeidi.
