Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Officials from the newly formed Palestinian government have been holding a series of meetings with several figures both inside the country and abroad. Today, July 23, President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to sit down with newly appointed Middle East envoy to the Quartet Committee, Tony Blair in this former British Prime Minister’s first visit to Ramallah in his new capacity. Blair is also scheduled to separately meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem.

The Abbas-Blair meeting follows the president’s return from Amman, Jordan, where he met with Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik. The subjects discussed during one-hour meeting between the two were not fully disclosed to the press, however, Abbas is said to have told Itzik that the one sure way to a secure and lasting peace is the end of the Israeli occupation along the 1967 borders.

Press reports did, nonetheless, say the meeting had ostensibly taken place to discuss the future of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was taken hostage by Palestinian groups in Gaza in June, 2006. Following the meeting, Hamas spokespersons in Gaza downplayed the meeting, saying any agreement made between Abbas and the Israeli government would be null and void if it does not include Hamas.

Newly appointed Prime Minister Salam Fayyad also held a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni in Jerusalem on Sunday night. The two supposedly discussed ways of improving Palestinian living conditions and several other political issues.

Last week the new prime minister also met with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak during which the two reportedly discussed the release of Palestinian tax revenues held by Israel among other issues.

While Abbas and Fayyad continue to hold meetings with Israeli, foreign and Arab officials, the president has remained adamant in his refusal to hold talks with Hamas representatives following the latter’s takeover of the Gaza Strip last month.
