Four Palestinians were killed in the dawn hours of this morning in the Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip during an Israeli army incursion. Two of those killed were members of the Izzedin Al Qasssam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. Also among the dead was Sabha Al Qara, the mother of Qassam activist Omar Al Qarra, who was killed in the raid. The mother and son died after being hit by an Israeli helicopter missile.

According to media reports and eyewitnesses, a number of Israeli military vehicles under cover of helicopters overhead entered the eastern region of Khan Younis in the pre-dawn hours. Violent clashes then ensued between the Israeli army and Palestinian activists in a bid to push the army back from residential areas. In addition to the four martyrs, 20 people were also injured in the confrontations from gunshot wounds and shrapnel from Israeli helicopter missiles.

The four killed in the invasion were identified as: Omar Al Qarra, Sabha Al Qarra, Ibrahim Al Sami and Mohammed Abu Sameh, also a Qassam Brigades activist.

The Israeli incursion comes at the heels of more internal Palestinian disputes. On August 13, the deposed Hamas interior ministry announced that all festivals, marches and demonstrations would require a permit from the Executive Force issued 48 hours prior to the event to be deemed “legal.” Hamas claims the new order is part of a bid to reinstate law and order in the Strip. The order also prohibits shooting during occasions such as weddings or closing off streets to the public.

The decision came in tandem with a demonstration organized by PLO factions in the Strip at the Unknown Soldiers’ Square in Gaza City. Executive Force members reportedly confiscated cameras and other equipment from journalists, there to cover the event. Fateh has severely criticized the decision, charging Hamas with forcefully imposing martial law in Gaza and trampling on the personal liberties the Palestinians have so long enjoyed.

On the diplomatic front, Israeli President Shimon Peres came under fire from both his own government and the Palestinians after proposing a possible “prisoners for peace” solution to the conflict. Peres proposed a gradual five-year release of the 11,000 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails in exchange for a cessation of resistance operations against Israel. Israeli media sources reported that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert immediately rejected the proposal along with other government officials.

The Palestinians have also rejected Peres’ proposal, saying all Palestinian prisoners must be released unconditionally.
