The most recent poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali reveals that:

  • (43.7%) of the Palestinians oppose the invitation of Netanyahu to president Mahmoud Abbas to address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset.
  • (56.0 %) anticipate a new confrontation with Israel.
  • (51.3%) oppose the continuation of the running peace negotiations with Israel.
  • (57.7%) anticipate the failure of the Palestine-Israeli negotiations.
  • (67.5%) are to various degrees worried about another potential military confrontation with Israel.
  • (55.4%) are pessimistic about the perspective of the success of the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
  • (62.0%) are in favor of conducting presidential and PLC elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The most recent poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali, conducted by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (www.pcpo.org) during the period from 27th of November till the 10th of December 2013 covered a random sample of (1000) Palestinian respondents representing the various demographic specimens of adult Palestinians (18 years and above) living in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip. It revealed that (43.75%) of the Palestinians oppose the invitation of the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to president Mahmoud Abbas to address the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset.

Dr. Kukali, in his capacity as President of the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion, said that a majority of the Palestinians feel that the running negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis launched on July 30, 2013 have reached an impasse and that there is no need to continue, particularly due to the Israeli intransigence and the continuation of building settlements and the expansion of the existing ones. Dr. Kukali further added that the majority of the Palestinian public anticipate the failure of these negotiations and are not optimistic about the perspective of their success, because they didn’t achieve throughout eight successive rounds in Washington any progress. In addition, the poll results unveiled, Dr. Kukali said, that also a majority of the Palestinians anticipate a new military confrontation with Israel and are therefore worried about the possible occurrence of such a confrontation. At the conclusion of his comments, Dr. Kukali expressed his hope to see the negotiations continue in a positive way that would yield to the two nations of the Holy Land on this Christmas eve and the occasion of welcoming a new year welfare, peace and prosperity. “Let’s hope that fighting, wars and violent confrontations stay away and that the hands of the clock never move backward, but forward towards peace and amity among the peoples of the region”, he said.

Visit of the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset)

Responding to the question:”Do you support or oppose the invitation of the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to president Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazin) to address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset ?”, (33.0 %) said “Yes, I support”, (43.7 %) “I oppose” and (23.3 %) said “I don’t know”.

Firing rockets from Gaza into Israel

Regarding the question:”What do you think about firing rockets from Gaza into Israel ?”, (21.4 %) said “I too much favor that”, (27.7 %) “I favor that”, (22.2 %) “I am reluctant towards such actions”, (10.4 %) “I oppose these actions”, (12.6 %) “I strongly oppose these actions” and (5.7 %) said “I don’t know”.

Military confrontation with Israel

With respect to the question:”To what extent are you worried about another military confrontation with Israel ?”, (19.6 %) said “too much worried”, (29.1 %) “much worried”, (18.7 %) “moderately worried”, (7.9 %) “not so much worried”, (14.9 %) “not worried”, (5.6 %) “not convinced of any choice” and (4.2 %) said “I don’t know”.

And on the question:”Do you expect in the near future a new confrontation with Israel ?”, (56.0 %) replied “Yes”, (26.6 %) “No” and (17.4 %) “I don’t know”.

Should the negotiations continue?

Responding to this question, (51.3 %) oppose the continuation of the running negotiations with Israel, whilst (33.6 %) are for their continuation and (15.1 %) refused to answer the question.

And in reply to the question:”Do you think that the continuation of the negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel would bring peace between the two parties in the coming years ?”, (6.8 %) said “Yes, I strongly believe”, ((28.6 %) “Yes, I somewhat believe”, (34.6 %) “No, I somehow don’t believe”, (22.8 %) “No, I definitely don’t believe that” and (7.2 %) said “I don’t know”.

Success of the negotiations

(57.7 %) of the Palestinians anticipate the failure of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in the nine months term allocated for their conclusion, whilst only (19.9 %) anticipate their success and (22.4 %) were reluctant to respond to the question.

And regarding the question:”Do you feel yourself optimistic or pessimistic about the success of the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis ?”, (55.4 %) said they are pessimistic, whilst only (26.8 %) said they are optimistic and (17.8 %) didn’t unveil their stance.

And responding to the question:”Do you think that the two parties, the Israelis and the Palestinians, would be able to forge this time a permanent deal that would put an end to the conflict between them ?”, (54.1 %) said “No”, (19.8 %) “Yes” and (26.1 %) said “I don’t know”.

The Israeli position

With respect to the question:” Do you think that the Israeli government is really willing to bring the peace negotiations to success, or do you think that it is not really willing to do that ?”, (9.8 %) said “I’m really sure that it is willing that”, (27.6 %) “I think that it is willing that”, (25.0 %) “I think it is not willing that”, (28.0 %) “I’m sure it is not willing that” and (9.6 %) said “I don’t know”.

The Elections

(62.2 %) of the Palestinians support conducting presidential elections immediately in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, whilst (28.0 %) oppose that and (9.8 %) refused to answer the relevant question.

With a similar result, (62.1 %) of the respondents support conducting PLC-elections immediately in the West Bank and Gaza, whilst (28.4 %) oppose that and (9.5 %) refused to answer the question.

Data comparison between Gaza Strip and the West Bank

1. (28.2 %) of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip anticipate the success of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations against (14.4 %) in the West Bank.

2. (42.6 %) of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip are in favor of continuing the negotiations with the Israelis against (27.7 %) in the West Bank.

3. (32.5 %) of Gaza Strip residents are optimistic about the success of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations against (23.1 %) in the West Bank.

4. (49.1 %) of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip are in favor of firing rockets into Israel against (49.3 %) in the West Bank.

5. (68.3 %) of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip anticipate the occurrence of a new military confrontation with Israel in the near future, against (47.9 %) in the West Bank.
