We are pleased to tell you that our Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) has carried out in the last few days a survey of economical character. The target this survey is aiming to is the knowledge of the directions and inclinations of the Palestinians in respect of a set of economic issues, such as their own evaluation of the economic situation and the impact of the Israeli siege and the security barriers on them. The target is to make also acquaintance with the role of the Palestinian Authority in establishing and managing the Palestinian economy. Add thereto the possibility of casting bridges of peace by carrying out Palestinian-Israeli joint ventures.

We trust that this survey will be a further step in the peace process and hope that it will be also of benefit to you. Please feel quite free to contact us if you have further questions. We will be pleased to have your comments.

In the latest public opinion poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali and conducted by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion ( PCPO):

  • (44.9%) Evaluated the general economic situation in the Palestinian territories as bad.
  • (77.0%) Worried to varying degrees about their means of subsistence.

In the latest poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali and conducted by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) in the period from (3 – 7) of July, 2005 during different working hours, a random sample of (940) Palestinian adults over 18 years was included, representing the various demographic models of the Palestinian society in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip.

“All interviews took place on the basis of random choices of respondent’s homes, i.e. face to face”, Elias Kukali, from the Public Relations Office at PCPO, said. These sites in turn were the beginning of the random sample choice made from that region in accordance with PCPO’s long experienced methodology. The sampling error throughout the survey is found at (±3.2%). Elias Kukali added "the percentage of female respondents was (48.3%) whereas that of the male respondents reached (51.7%). He stated that the distribution of the random sample among the residential areas of the respondents was (65.5%) in the West Bank, incl. East Jerusalem, and (34.5%) in Gaza Strip. The average age of the random sample of the respondents was (31.7) years.

Dr. Nabil Kukali, Director of the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion said that the most significant thin the poll has revealed is the fidgetiness of the "Palestinian street", particularly about matters related to the capability of the Palestinian Authority of attaining economic achievements or even the pushing of an economic plan or program as to encounter the existing crises.

Dr. Kukali added that the majority of the Palestinians believe that the PA is not qualified to improve the quality of life for them. He also pointed out that the majority of the Palestinians are at various extents in favor of an open market and joint projects between Israel and the Palestinians, where the vast majority, around (77%) are worried about the subsistence of their families and believe that the PA is unable to provide job opportunities for the Palestinian laborers, who were working in Israel. Dr. Kukali said "around (67%) are at various degrees in favor of a joint cooperation between all the nations of the region on the different economic fields as to encounter the suffocating economic crisis the Palestinian territories are suffering from".

Dr. Kukali further said that about (45%) of the Palestinians evaluated their economic conditions as bad, and he demanded from Israel to ease the restrictions imposed on the movement of the laborers and goods, to lift up the barriers and to facilitate the matters of daily life for the Palestinian people. He believes that the Palestinian territories are passing now through a suffocating economic crisis and that there is a bad need of supporting the Palestinian economy by all the countries of the world and to exert pressure on Israel in order to raise the restrictions laid on the Palestinian people, since such restrictions left negative effects on the growth and development of the Palestinian economy.
