From Majd Kokaly – Information Section

In the latest poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali and published by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) in the period from (20–26) of July, 2005 during different working hours, a random sample of (828) Palestinian adults over 18 years was included, representing the various demographic models of the Palestinian society in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip.

“All interviews took place on the basis of random choices of respondent’s homes, i.e. face to face”, Elias Kukali, from the Public Relations Office at PCPO, said. The choices were takes from a total of (120) election sites. These election sites are randomly chosen by using the method of the simple random sample. These sites in turn were the beginning of the random sample choice made from that regions in accordance with PCPO’s long experienced methodology. The sampling error throughout the survey is found at (±3.4%). Elias Kukali added "the percentage of female respondents was (47.8%) whereas that of the male respondents reached (52.2%). He stated that the distribution of the random sample among the residential areas of the respondents was (63.2%) in the West Bank, incl. East Jerusalem, and (36.8%) in Gaza Strip. The average age of the random sample of the respondents was (33.5) years.

Dr. Kukali, the Director of Palestinian Center for Public Opinion said that this survey reveals that the most significant results of this survey was that a large percentage of the Palestinians were worried about their personal security. This percentage amounted to (82.9%), which means an increase of (13.4%) in comparison to the previous survey conducted on June 20, 2005. Additionally, the promise to disarm the Palestinians refugees of Lebanon which President Abu Mazen committed himself to was supported by the respondents. Dr. Nabil Kukali added that about two thirds of the respondents supported the protrusion of a third political trend in the Palestinian Society other than the movements of HAMAS and FATEH. The rise in the percentage of those who supported the emergence of a third political trend can be ascribed to the situation of intensive frustration prevailing in the Palestinian Society as a result of the conduct of the two main rivals: HAMAS and FATEH, mainly following the recent deplorable events in GAZA Strip.

Dr. Kukali said the results of the poll were as follows:
