The target of this poll is to probe the inclinations and notions of the Palestinians about the calls on putting an end to the chaos of arms, anarchy, the imposition of the law and the concerns of the Palestinians about the existing situation. In addition, this poll casts light on other issues such as the PLC-elections in January 2006, performance of the PA-president, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazin) and the formation of a new cabinet. This poll has been fully financed by PCPO own resources.

In the latest political poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali:

  • A plurality (61.5%) of the participants supports the formation of a new cabinet.
  • Around one- third (37.6%) of the participants would vote for Fateh list in the elections of the proportional representation, and (25.6%) for Hamas.
  • A great majority (64.8%) Of the respondents are worried at different degrees about their personal security.
  • An overwhelming majority (81.4%) of the Palestinians support putting an end to all forms of weapons chaos, anarchy and the multi-authority society.
  • (70.1%) support the PA-campaign for putting an end to the armed shows and the withdrawal of weapons from the street.
  • An overwhelming majority (82.8%) of the respondents support the dismissal of all heads of the security departments from their offices.
  • A great majority (68.0%)of the respondents support the division of the Ministry of Interior & National Security.
  • An overwhelming majority (76.9%) of the respondents support to various degrees the continuation of the calm period with the Israelis.
  • (24.7%) believe that Mr. Marwan Barghouthi is the most adequate candidate for the office of the Prime Minister of the next cabinet.

The latest poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali and published by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO), which interviewed for this purpose a random sample of (1043) Palestinian adults over 18 years old representing the demographic specimen in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip, has revealed that (61.5%) of the Palestinians support the formation of a new cabinet.

Dr. Nabil Kukali, Director of PCPO, said that the most important thing this poll shows is that a high rate of the Palestinians, (64.8%), are concerned about their personal security, and that there is a popular support for putting an end to the armed shows and the withdrawal of weapons from the street. Dr. Kukali pointed out that a high rate of the Palestinians support the division of the Ministry of Interior & National Security into two ministries in conformity with the competencies of each of them and the law. Moreover, the majority of the Palestinians, Dr. Kukali said, namely (37.6%) will vote in the coming PLC-elections for Fateh List, followed by (25.6%) for Hamas. "A remarkable rise has been noticed in the satisfaction of the Palestinians towards the performance of President Mahmoud Abbas, Dr. Kukali commented. The poll results established furthermore that Mr. Marwan Bargouthi would obtain the greatest support as a candidate for the office of the next prime-minister in case the present cabinet will be changed, followed by Mr. Mahmoud Al-Zahar in the 2. position and Mr. Mustafa Barghouthi in the 3. position.

“All interviews took place on the basis of random choices of respondent’s homes, i.e. face to face”, Elias Kukali, from the Public Relations Office at PCPO, said. The choices were takes from a total of (118) election sites. These election sites are randomly chosen by using the method of the simple random sample. These sites in turn were the beginning of the random sample choice made from those regions in accordance with PCPO’s long experienced methodology. The sampling error throughout the survey is found at (±3.03%). Elias Kukali added "the percentage of female respondents was (47.3%) whereas that of the male respondents reached (52.7%). He stated that the average size of the respondent families was (7.18) individuals. He said that the composition of the sample according to the type of residence was as follows: (46.6%) city, (35.4%) village, (18.0%) refugee camp. And the Average age of the sample:

(32.9) years.

Elias kukali added that the percentage of married respondents in the sample added up to (64.1%), while that of the single ones reached (30.8%), and that of other cases was (5.1%). He stated that the poll was conducted October (15 – 20 ), 2005.
