Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Long-time Palestinian peace activist and champion of human rights and democracy, Hanan Ashrawi has been named the recipient of this years' distinguished Olof Palme Prize.

Recognizing her outstanding achievement in her relentless fight for human rights and peace, the Prize is awarded to Ashrawi at an important time when the voices of peace in the Palestinian fight for freedom often go unheard, overshadowed by the violence of an illegal Israeli occupation that affects both Palestinians and Israelis.

"This award is recognition of the Palestinian struggle for dignity and independence," said Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and Secretary General of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy. "It is empowering and encouraging to see that during the most difficult of times, there are people who maintain a spirit of seeking peace that humanizes both peoples and embodies justice."

The Olof Palme Memorial Fund was established by Palme's family and by the Social Democratic Party in honour of the slain Swedish prime minister, who was shot to death Feb. 28, 1986 in Stockholm.

"Olof Palme was a man of great principle, an indefatigable seeker of justice and peace and his impact has resonated globally as someone who always stood for peace and democracy and the struggle for human dignity everywhere," said Ashrawi. "His work is inseparable from that of many other distinguished Swedes who are maintaining this tradition and keeping the quest for international understanding and common security alive. "

Awarded annually, the award recognized Ashrawi as an "inspiring symbol of a new, democratic, peaceful Middle East." Ashrawi will be awarded the Prize on January 30, 2003 in Stockholm. The ceremony will also be attended by Ms. Anna Lindh, Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Previous winners include Cyril Ramaphosa, South African freedom fighter and now Secretary General of the African National Congress and Salima Ghezali, international award-winning Algerian journalist.
