Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Israeli troops kill 7 Palestinians, arrest 1000, and demolish 8 Palestinian homes within 24 hours.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) expresses serious concern regarding Israel’s obvious exploitation of the war against Iraq, and the fact that world attention is currently focused away from the occupied Palestinian territories, in order to intensify its own aggression against the Palestinians. In a clear and deadly escalation, Israeli troops have shot and killed 7 Palestinians within 24 hours in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (between Thursday morning, April 3rd until Friday morning, April 4th, 2003).

In the early hours of Friday, Israeli forces, backed by tanks, armoured vehicles and Apache helicopters, carried out full scale military incursions into the West Bank town of Jenin and Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. The incursions lasted for hours and ended with the withdrawal of troops at a later time.

In the West Bank town of Tulkarem, 1000 Palestinian men are still imprisoned in a school after Israeli troops rounded them up for interrogation three days ago. Palestinian sources reported that the condition of the prisoners is deteriorating, due to lack of decent supplies.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Israeli authorities demolished 8 Palestinian homes in occupied east Jerusalem, after claiming that they were built without the “required” Israeli permits (which are rarely granted to Palestinian residents of the city). Israeli sources also confirmed that 3 more Palestinian homes are due to be demolished in the coming days. Majed Amira, 26, said that he had spent all his savings to build his new home, which Israeli authorities demolished suddenly and without any kind of warning. Israeli authorities also demolished 5 Palestinian homes in Sur Baher near Jerusalem, and in Al-Khader village near Bethlehem.

On Thursday, Israeli forces killed a total of 7 Palestinians. Israeli troops shot and killed 4 Palestinian civilians during an incursion into Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Later during the day, Israeli forces also killed a 26 year old Palestinian farmer in the Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian man in Nablus whom they “suspected” belonged to the Islamic group Hamas. In the West Bank town of Qalqilia, Israeli troops shot and killed a 14 year old Palestinian boy; no alleged “reason.”

Finally, in the latest of Israel’s “pre-emptive” measures, Israeli authorities arrested 3 Palestinian-Israeli citizens (Palestinians with Israeli citizenship) after claiming that they belonged to the Islamic Jihad group.

Israel’s military escalation against the Palestinians since the outbreak of the war against Iraq 17 days ago bears witness to Israel’s premeditated policy of exploiting regional developments in order to bash the captive Palestinians into submission, and into accepting the realities of Israel’s illegal occupation.

It must be clearly stated that Israel’s short-sighted attempt to maximise its gains from the current war against Iraq will backfire, and will fuel more Palestinian anger and frustration. It must also be clear to Israel, as well as the international community, that the Palestinian people currently living under Israeli occupation are protected by international law (specifically the 4th Geneva Convention).

Therefore, any attempt by Israel to collectively punish the Palestinians, massacre them, arrest them en mass, and terrorise them in the hope that they might wilfully flee their homeland constitutes a direct and grave violation of international legality and international morality. Israel will be held responsible for its crimes.

MIFTAH urges the international community to voice its protest against Israel’s aggressive policies towards the Palestinian people, specifically since world attention is inevitably focused on developments in Iraq. We call for your support and solidarity at a time when the Palestinian people feel abandoned, betrayed, and threatened.
