"Made in Palestine" - in Houston,TX "Made in Palestine" is the first comprehensive art exhibition in the United States devoted to the contemporary art of Palestine. It is a survey of work by artists living in the West Bank, Gaza, and the 1948 Land. Also included in the exhibition are a smaller number of Palestinian artists from Syria, Jordan, and the United States. This exhibition opens Saturday, May 3rd, 2003 with a gala reception for the artists from 8-10 pm. The opening will take place at the STATION 1502 Alabama at La Branch, Houston, Texas 77004. This exhibition will remain on view through October 2003. The Ineri curatorial staff has selected the following artists to particpate:
Zuhdi Al-Adawi,
These artists, representing two generations of modernists and postmodernists, work in a multiplicity of techniques and mediums, including painting, sculpture, video, performance, textiles, ceramics, and photography. In style the work ranges from realism to abstraction and conceptual art. Its influences range from the art of ancient Near East and Egypt to Dada, Surrealism, Social Realism, Abstract Expressionism, Arte Povera, and Installation Art. In other words, Palestinian artists, like their peers in Europe and the United States, are thoroughly modern, but with a significant difference. The Palestinian artist is deeply concerned with the historical fate of the Palestinian people and with life and death issues of freedom and justice. Emily Jacir's Memorial to 418 Palestinian Villages which were Destroyed-Depopulated, and Occupied by Israel in 1948, is a refugee tent that provides a signpost for the obscured history of Palestinians. Sliman Mansour creates "emblems of decay" that are "dry, cracked and distorted reminding us of dispersion, waste, pain and death." Abdel Rahmen Al Muzayen's masterful line drawings of the ruined buildings of Jenin express a subtle, but commanding love of place. Palestinian art is a unique contribution to contemporary art because of its diversity, its focus on liberation and its singular approaches to pictorial expression.
