Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Date: Monday 5/26/2003

Place: French Consulate Jerusalem

A group of Palestinian leaders, including legislators and politicians, met this morning with French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin at the French Consulate in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian delegation included: Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, Palestinian Legislative Council member and General Secretary of MIFTAH, Dr. Emile Jarju’i, member of the PLO Executive Committee, and PLC representatives Ahmad Sughayyar, Hatim AbdelQader and Ahmad AlBattsh, as well as AbdAlQder AlHusseini and Issa Qassisyieh from the Orient House.

FM De Villepin expressed his country’s interest in playing a major role regarding the implementation of the ‘roadmap.’ De Villepin conveyed France’s commitment to pursue the pressing and difficult issues, such as settlements, refugees and Jerusalem, with the aim of succeeding in the implementation of the peace plan.

The Jerusalemite Palestinian delegation stressed the need for direct involvement by ‘Quartet’, comprised of the EU, UN, US and Russia, asking the international community not to surrender the peace process to Israeli and American dictates. They added that active involvement of the ‘Quartet’ members will lead to more even-handedness while giving the proposed plan international credibility.

De Villepin was briefed on Israeli violations and oppression tools such as restrictions on movement, home demolition, assassination, and imprisonment of politicians, extra judicial killings, as well as comprehensive discussions on the core issues such as Jerusalem and the refugee question. A presentation on settlement activity and bypass roads build up isolating east Jerusalem and its residents was delivered to the French FM.

The delegation also requested that the international community address Palestinian security and not just Israeli security needs. They demanded a monitoring and verification mechanism to include arbitration and intervention.

The meeting was concluded with the delegation expressing its gratitude to France for its unwavering efforts throughout the conflict to support a just peace for the Palestinian people, and specifically the FM’s clear and fair position.
