Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Before dawn, Israeli forces descended on Gaza City in a blitz raid that lasted several hours and resulted in the death of 13 Palestinians, with scores of innocent civilians sustaining serious injury.

The al-Shujaiya neighborhood of Gaza City suffered the most, as 12 of its residents were killed, while Rafah, typically the prime target of Israel’s incursions, was also attacked, resulting in the death of a Palestinian man, three demolished houses and razed citrus and olive groves.

The 13 Palestinians killed were identified as Mohammad al-Ajala, 34, Haitham Abed, 28, Hani Abu Skhaileh, 25, Mahdi Ziadeh, 25, Ayman Khaleel, 25, Akram Akilan, 22, Ashraf Hassanane, 23, Ahmad Abu Armana, 22, Ismail Abu Ata, 22, Amer al-Ghamary, 20, Mohammad Helles, 17, Muhammad Tantawi, 17 and Ibrahim Za’rub. 50 Palestinians sustained injuries, nine of whom are in critical condition according to Palestinian doctors. Three young boys were also among the injured.

This was the bloodiest attack since 14 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike in October, 2003. However, exactly two weeks ago Israel raided Rafah refugee camp killing eight Palestinians including an 11-year-old child. These raids have come in the wake of Sharon’s promise to evacuate 17 of the 21 illegal Jewish settlements in the heart of Gaza, and place serious doubt on Sharon’s willingness to follow through with his plans.

Israel’s escalation of the situation, through raids, has become a well recognized strategy for reigniting the violence and deflecting pressure away from Israel’s Prime Minister. Sharon, facing indictment on bribery charges, upheaval from his rightist government over his plans to “unilaterally disengage” from the Palestinians, and pressure from the US to reroute the Separation Wall to ease Palestinian suffering, seems to be reverting to his old tactics of fueling the Palestinian street in order to place the blame on them and excuse his actions.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of a Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) is alarmed at Israel’s operations in Gaza, which have resulted in unbearable loss of civilian lives. MIFTAH strongly opposes the killing of all civilians, whether Palestinians or Israelis, and calls on the international community to condemn Israeli incursion into Palestinian territories that only further fuel the conflict. The Israeli government must consider the grave consequences of its actions and must resolve not to plunge the situation into further chaos.
