Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

This morning Israeli forces closed down the main road connecting Ramallah to Birzeit and 35 other small villages. Cement blocks prevent cars from travelling on the road, and the installation of a new Israeli checkpoint forces masses of commuters to walk 3 kilometers to catch a taxi going from Ramallah to Birzeit, or any of the surrounding villages.

The long walks through "checkpoint areas" in the scorching heat pose a serious health risk to the elderly, children, and the sick. Ambulances are not allowed to take patients to proper medical facilities which happen to be on the "other side" of a random Israeli checkpoint. Cars carrying provisions such as food, water, and medicine are also denied the right to pass through military checkpoints, further aggravating the situation in many areas already stricken by severe shortages. In this case, villagers are unable to transport their produce to Ramallah, thereby losing their only source of income. In fact, these frequent, sporadic "closures" of various areas in the Occupied Territories are having a devastating effect on an already frail Palestinian economy.

One of the more disturbing effects of this latest checkpoint, and previous ones with similar restrictions, has been their impact on Birzeit University. There are 2,536 students registered for the summer session at the University, and the frequent closures of the Birzeit-Ramallah road has rendered their education a daunting, if not impossible task. Many students are taking this session in order to finish off their credits, graduate, and join the workforce. Students from Ramallah are afraid to come to the University due to the constant harassment they are subject to at the roadblock. In fact, three University students have been arrested at these checkpoints since the beginning of the summer session in June 2001.

Construction at Birzeit University has nearly come to a standstill. Two buildings scheduled to be in full operation with classrooms, libraries, and offices by the beginning of September will not be completed as planned, and at this point, their projected date of completion has been pushed back indefinitely. This latest closure once again reveals a truly twisted Israeli agenda aimed at closing down Palestinian educational institutions. In so doing, Israel is attacking Palestinian society at its core.

Israel is tightening its grip on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip by imposing these checkpoints, which truly are a constant thorn in the flesh of the Palestinian people. They deprive all Palestinians of their basic human rights, and the ability to lead "normal" lives by any standard. The blatant injustices and dehumanization suffered at these military roadblocks on a daily basis is staggering. It would appear once again that Israel is trying to choke the life out of Palestinians, in a useless attempt to "break their will". This however, will NEVER happen, as all Palestinians persevere in their quest for basic rights of existence taken for granted in so many parts of the world.

MIFTAH calls on the international community to take necessary measures in order to put an end to Israel's multiple siege of Palestinian towns and villages, all of which are symptomatic of an illegal occupation, which remains at the root of the conflict here in the Middle East. What will it take for the world to hear the Palestinian cry for justice?
