Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) urges the international community to take immediate action in response to the latest Israeli escalation against the Palestinian people.

For the first time since the June 1967 War, Israel has used F16 fighter jets against Palestinian towns. The attacks were carried out yesterday, Friday May 18th, 2001, against Palestinian police targets in the towns of Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarem, and Gaza, killing 12 people and wounding more than 100.

Israel's use of F16 fighter jets brings the level of aggression against the Palestinians to alarming depths, and draws the ongoing conflict to dangerous proportions.

This policy of brute military force against an unarmed civilian population is blatant "terror', disrespect to the most basic human rights, and a clear disregard to the human value of the Palestinian people.

Since the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada (uprising) in late September 2000, Israel has inflicted horrific human and material damage on the Palestinians; 504 people have been killed (including 123 children below the age of 18), more than 14,000 have been wounded (including 1,500 permanent disabilities), more than 3,669,000 m² of cultivated Palestinian land has been completely destroyed, 174 Palestinian schools have been shut down due to Israeli military siege, and more than 600 Palestinian buildings (mostly residential) have been completely destroyed. (Please see Special Report: Intifada Update at www.miftah.org/reports/intifada.html)

Israel's multiple siege policy on Palestinian towns and villages continues unabated, strangulating the social, political, and economic life of the Palestinian people. More than 60% of the Palestinian people are now living below poverty line (US$2 daily income). Palestinian institutions (governmental, non-governmental, and private) have been virtually paralyzed due to the siege, leaving dangerous implications on the political and development processes of Palestinian society.

Israel's war mongering and ostensible demonstration of military power against the Palestinians embodies the short-sightedness of Ariel Sharon's vision for "peace and security." Repeatedly, the Palestinians have cautioned against Sharon's brutality, and the dangers it poses on any prospects of peace in the region. Clearly, the latest escalation by Israel is an attempt by Sharon to suppress Palestinian aspirations for liberty, independence and peace, and maintain illegal occupation by means of relative power superiority. This is a dangerously narrow perspective with potential 'spill-over' effects that will only doom the region to further bloodshed and injustice.

Peace and security will only be achieved by a comprehensive end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the return of the Palestinian refugees, as outlined by United Nations Resolutions 242, 338, 194, and the 'land-for-peace' equation formally adopted by all parties in Washington DC in 1993.

MIFTAH views the international community's role as a vital element in putting an end to the ongoing brutality against the Palestinians. The international community must take tangible steps towards the fulfilment of the following objectives:

1-To take firm action in ending Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, and take into serious consideration the legal, political, and moral implications of Israel's unleashing of mass destructive weapons against Palestinian residential areas.

2-To realize the necessity and urgency in providing international protection to the Palestinian people, and take immediate steps to the fulfilment of this objective.

3-To take firm steps in condemning the construction and expansion of illegal Jewish settlements on occupied Palestinian territory.

4-To realize that the underlying causes of the ongoing conflict are posed by Israel's continued illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and disregard to the most basic human rights of the Palestinians.

5-To hold Israel accountable for the horrific crimes and violations it continues to carry out against the Palestinians.

6-To take firm steps in upholding every human being's right to freedom, democracy, security, and independence, including the Palestinian people.
