Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) is seriously alarmed at Israeli efforts to distort the facts about its massacres against the Palestinian people, most recently by attempting to dehumanize Palestinian parents.

Since the outbreak of violence 4 weeks ago, Israeli officials and media have falsely portrayed Palestinian parents as cold-blooded and cruel villains who willingly and intentionally send their children to the frontlines in clashes with Israeli soldiers, with clear implications that the Palestinians have no sense of humanity or regret to their children's deaths whatsoever. Adding insult to injury, Israelis have ridiculously stated that the parents receive financial rewards for the death of their children.

In a recent effort which compliments its racist and biased journalistic policy, Israel's Jerusalem Post Newspaper has published an article on Friday 27/10/2000 entitled "Child Sacrifice is Palestinian Paganism." The article attacks the Palestinians for using their children's lives as a tool for propaganda against Israel. It also makes reference to the speech delivered by Queen Silvia of Sweden at a meeting of the World Childhood Foundation that took place at the UN on 18/10/2000, which they claim has directly attacked Palestinian parents.

In response to this desperate attempt by Israel to justify its inhumanity, cruelty, and disregard to the lives of innocent Palestinian children, MIFTAH would like to state the following:

First, as the facts of the massacres currently stand, the total of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers stands at 122, 45 of which are below the age of 18 (4 clinical deaths). The total number of Palestinian casualties is 5252, 1500 of which are below the age of 18. In light of these horrific figures within a relatively short period of time, the Israeli government has obviously not taken the necessary precautions in avoiding civilian harm, particularly children. It stands in grave moral and legal violation that children's protests are met with live ammunition.

Second, the speech of Queen Silvia of Sweden did not directly and explicitly attack the Palestinians for placing their children in harm's way, rather, the official Swedish response to the speech emphasized that "…the Queen made no references, neither in her speech nor during the following replies to questions asked by the audience, to the current situation in the Middle East."

Finally, Israeli claims that the Palestinians intentionally allow their children to take part in the protests are invalid. More often than not, the children are faced with the hostile presence of Israeli soldiers nearby their homes and/or schools, giving provocative cause for their protests, and definite proof that the killing of children, and civilians for that matter, can be stopped only with the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from Palestinian territories.

MIFTAH cautions against such attempts by the Israeli media to portray false images of the Palestinians, particularly at a time in which the Palestinian people are suffering from unimaginable atrocities by Israeli soldiers, as well as economic strangulation and movement restrictions all over the Occupied Territories.

In her recently published article "Anatomy of Racism," Dr. Hanan Ashrawi accurately asserts that "…The most blatantly racist slur is the Israeli theft of our humanity as parents. In an attempt to rob us of our most basic feelings for our children, we are accused of "sending [our] children out to die" for the sake of "scoring media points."
