Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, (MIFTAH) would like to commemorate the most tragic event that took place in Beirut, Lebanon exactly 22 Septembers ago.

On September 16th 1982, just after mid-day, Lebanese Phalangist militia in collaboration with the Israeli army, stormed into the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in the southern suburb of Beirut, and went on a killing spree that lasted for 40 hours, costing the lives of many innocent Palestinian civilians (estimates range between 700 – 3000 deaths.) For the sake of argument no matter what the number of deaths is, the events that took place in Sabra and Shatila should never be forgotten. It is said that ‘quality outweighs quantity,’ in the case of the atrocious massacres of Sabra and Shatila, it is more than fitting to say so.

13 days after the evacuation of the PLO and its Fighters, 2 days after the assassination of President elect Bashir Gmeyel and following US assurances to the PLO by Phillip Habib that Palestinian civilians would be protected by a multi-national force; the massacres commenced with full force and effect.

In his accounts of the event, Former Lebanese Minister and Phalangist leader, Elie Hobeika is quoted as saying, “When the operation to clean out the camps of Sabra and Shatila from Palestinian fighters began, myself and Sharon were standing and observing it on the balcony of the Kuwaiti Embassy (adjacent to the two camps.) 22 Septembers later, Sharon stands as the Prime Minister of Israel and ironically enough has been deemed, “A man of Peace” by his infamous friend George W. Bush.

The case to prosecute Prime Minister Sharon by the survivors of Sabra and Shatila has been halted, on the grounds that, the case cannot be followed through due to Sharon’s immunity as the Prime Minister of the State of Israel.

In order to mark the anniversary of Sabra and Shatila, the Israeli army chose to kill 10 civilians, of which one is an 11-year old girl, in the West Bank city of Nablus. Thus, MIFTAH urges the international community, particularly through the established international legal mechanisms, to hold Israel and in specific PM Sharon fully accountable for such acts of terror. Israel's campaign of systematic killing must be halted and dealt with consequently as a crime against the Palestinian people, and against humanity as a whole.
