Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Israeli forces killed one Palestinian (Muhammad Obeiyat, 45) and wounded at least 20 civilians yesterday, Sunday 6th, 2001, in the Palestinian town of Beit Jala, including 5-year old Nicola Abu Ghannam.

The Israeli army carried out a full-scale military incursion into the Palestinian-controlled town of Beit Jala, using tank shells, missiles, and heavy machineguns. The incursion resulted in the complete destruction of various Palestinian homes, leaving tens of families homeless. Israeli Defense Minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, said he had given the army "…blanket permission to move into Beit Jala."

On the same day, the nearby towns of Al-Khader and Beit Sahur suffered from heavy Israeli strikes, with serious material damage inflicted on various residential buildings.

Since the outbreak of the Intifada in late September 2000, Israeli security forces have killed 467 Palestinians and wounded almost 13,400. Almost 150 children below the age of 18 are among the dead, and more than 1,500 of the injured suffer from permanent disabilities. The number of Palestinian buildings completely destroyed by Israeli attacks since September 2000 exceeds 560, including residential buildings, mosques, churches, schools and hospitals.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) views with serious alarm the ongoing 'massacres' being committed daily by Israel against the Palestinian people.

Israel continues to embark on a policy of brute military force against the Palestinians, without the slightest consideration to the lives of the Palestinian people.

Israel continues to intensify its policy of multiple-siege on Palestinian areas, causing the entire Palestinian population to suffer from serious and irreversible economic and social strangulation.

Israel continues to violate the most basic Palestinian rights by carrying out military operations within Palestinian-controlled areas (areas A and B) and by carrying out incursions into Palestinian towns and villages.

Israel continues to carry out assassinations, extra judicial killings, and abductions of targeted Palestinian activists and political figures.

MIFTAH strongly believes that the international community must take immediate and concrete action in stopping the horrific atrocities being committed by Israel against the Palestinians. The Palestinian people are not merely victims of military occupation and oppression, but more importantly, and dangerously, victims of systematic ethnic cleansing and unimaginable cruelty.
