Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) is concerned with the unfortunate fold of events in Nazareth over the construction of a new mosque nearby the Christian "Basilica of the Annunciation."

This dispute has its seeds planted in the municipal elections of Nazareth that were held a few months ago. It is primarily a political dispute dating back to faction rivalries within the city; it is not, as widespread interpretation suggested, a religious one.

The previous Netanyahu-led Israeli government had approved the construction of the new mosque, with the purpose of creating tensions and religious dispute amongst its Palestinian citizens, thereby intentionally throwing seeds for sectarianism.

The present Barak-led government, through the adoption of the previous government's decision, has contributed to the volatility of the situation, rather than defusing it. Israel's ill treatment of the situation has created an unnecessary escalation of the disagreement.

Palestinian society has always enjoyed a tradition of religious tolerance, cultural pluralism, and diversity. Relations between Christians and Muslims within Palestinian society have never experienced elements of hatred or discrimination, and it is unlikely that such elements will emerge as long as Palestinians are left free to conduct their own internal affairs.

Efforts by President Arafat, King Fahed of Saudi Arabia, and the High Islamic Council in Jerusalem have offered a more constructive alternative towards defusing the disagreement. They have called for postponing the construction of the mosque, or its erection at another location.

The situation in Nazareth must neither be allowed to jeopardize the current final status talks, nor the celebrations for the new millennium. Israel's ill intentions in conveying a false message to the world that the Palestinian people are unable to foster peaceful inter-religious relations should be recognized and halted.

The dawn of the new millennium must herald an era of peace, reconciliation, and a message for all nations and peoples to put an end to world conflict, taking into consideration that the birth of all monotheistic religions has its origins in this very land.
