Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) held a sit-in strike at the Friends Meeting House on Tuesday October 16th, 2001, in an effort to highlight the issue of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, in particular the treatment of women prisoners and their immediate families.

The sit-in strike was held jointly by MIFTAH's Program of Empowerment of Palestinian Women with the Palestinian Women's Affairs Technical Committee (WATC), the Palestinian Prisoners Club, The Mandela Institute and Al-Dameer. This strike was attended by a number of lawyers who are experts in this field. Testimonies and facts were expressed.

The number of Palestinian political prisoners has risen from 1600 prior to the current Intifada to over 2400. There are thirteen female prisoners in Israeli jails, four of which are minors. These prisoners suffer different violations of their rights on a daily basis, including (Israeli government-ratified) torture methods. Out of the thirteen prisoners, only four have been legally tried and sentenced. These prisoners are denied their right to family visits as well as visits by their lawyers. These women prisoners have repeatedly held strikes in the hope that justice by the Israeli authorities may be observed. These strikes did not reap anything, except more torture and humiliation.

Israel is the only state that legislated the use of torture in its prisons. This is a direct violation of international, civil, and humanitarian law, and a clear disregard to the most basic human rights. Ironically, The Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading of Punishment was ratified by Israel in 1991.

International law states that torture is unjustifiable under any circumstances. Israel is in violation of articles 2, 7, and 15 of the UN International Convention on Civil Political Rigts of 1966. Israel is also in breach of other internationally-binding agreements, including the right of political prisoners to meet with an attorney and immediate family.

MIFTAH urges the international community to take immediate and concrete action to hold Israel accountable for its violations and to ensure its respect and implementation of international law. Such action is crucial in order to provide Palestinian political prisoners with representation and protection from Israeli authorities, in particular the inhuman and "illegal" behavior of wardens in Israeli jails.

One of the outcomes of the mentioned sit-in strike is a petition demanding the release of all political prisoners. This petition also demands that international intervention and investigation into torture policies of Israeli wardens be carried out. The petition is being sent to the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Mary Robinson.
