JERUSALEM – May 31, 2005 – The city of Jerusalem, in particular the eastern side and its inhabitants, have been under constant attack by Israeli authorities ever since the 1967 war, in which the state of Israel occupied the eastern part of the city. Since the beginning of the Palestinian uprising (Intifada) on September 28, 2000, Israeli housing authorities have demolished 7,731 Palestinian homes.

Today, the municipality of Jerusalem declared that it was preparing measures to demolish around 88 buildings, which are homes to more than 1,000 Palestinians, in the Silwan neighborhood of Arab east Jerusalem. This latest decision comes under the false pretext that the houses were built without ‘permits’ and is yet another attempt by the state of Israel to create new facts on the ground, ultimately annexing the whole of Jerusalem, making a viable, contiguous Palestinian state impossible.

These continued violations, along with Israel’s long list of other human rights violations, are in complete contravention to international law, specifically to the rights and duties of the occupying power. The Geneva conventions, to which Israel is a high contracting party, states that, “[a]ny destruction and/or confiscation by the occupying power of real or personal property belonging individually or collectively to private persons, or to the State, or to other public authorities, or to social or cooperative organizations, is prohibited.”

Hence, MIFTAH calls on the international community and the Middle East peace quartet not to stand idle but, rather, take unequivocal measures to stop the state of Israel from this immoral theft of land, which will leave many innocent civilians homeless, and to put an end to its continued policy of creating ever more facts on the ground that preclude a final status solution.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
