On the morning of June 5, 1967, the Israeli army launched a war against Egypt, Syria and Jordan. Israel destroyed 80 percent of these Arab air forces and seized control of the West Bank (including east Jerusalem), Gaza, the Golan Heights and the Sinai peninsula, in what would lead to one of the greatest injustices and violations of basic human rights and freedom of a people in modern times.

With the 1967 War, Israel began its brutal and repressive 38-year-old occupation of Palestinian land and its people, causing constant tension, instability, discrimination, and cycles of violence that continue until today. However, Israel exacerbates this condition through the illegal establishment of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the illegal construction of the Annexation Wall inside the 1967 borders, the torturous and unjustified detention of thousands of Palestinians, the confiscation of land and the numerous other violations of international law and human rights. It is the longest period of military occupation anywhere in the world since 1945.

Shortly after the war, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 242 on November 7, 1967, laying out two primary conditions for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the region. It first calls for the “withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict,” and then for the “termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.”

However, Israel has yet to comply and withdraw from the territories it occupies, resulting in an entire generation of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza growing up under Israeli occupation. It has yet to offer both Palestinians and Israelis secure and recognized borders. In fact, Israel is the only country in the world without internationally declared borders. Thus, MIFTAH calls on Israel to finally put an end to the illegitimate occupation. Only then can true peace and security be achieved for all people involved and suffering from the tragic events of 1967.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
