Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Planning and Zoning Committee of the Israeli Jerusalem municipality approved plans to build 21 housing units inside the Old City’s Muslim Quarter near Bab Assahira (Herod’s Gate) to house 16 Israeli families. The building and the proposed site are in violation of existing building codes within the Old City. Proceeding with its construction is provocative and spoils the calm coexistence that has been kept among the different ethnic and religious groups living in the Old City.

Examination of Israeli colonizing activities in and around Jerusalem in the past few years attests to Israel’s continued application of the 'Greater Jerusalem' scheme, which was presumably discontinued as the Road Map determined Judaization of Palestine and Jerusalem as antithetical to peace. Pursuance of this scheme unequivocally contravenes the peace process, yet Israeli colonization and road construction continues in East Jerusalem altering the demographic and physical status of the city while pushing out existing Palestinian neighborhoods.

Home demolitions, denial of building permits and the application of the Absentee Property Law serve to expel Palestinians exclusively, violating international conventions that safeguard the rights of a people under occupation. In blatant disregard to the advisory ruling against the Wall by the International Court of Justice, one year later Israel's Cabinet endorsed the continued and exaggerated construction of the Wall for Jerusalem. The Jerusalem segment of the Wall ejects a population of about 55,000 Palestinians from four Arab neighborhoods onto the West Bank side, while the Wall’s path enfolds the largest Jewish settlement Ma’aleh Adumim, of close to 30,000 inhabitants, into Jerusalem. Individually, Israeli policies and restrictions offend the Palestinian population. Collectively, they deliberately and completely negate Palestinian rights to live and work in the city, coercing them to leave it.

MIFTAH calls upon to the members of the International Community to resume its requisite roles to stop the current attempt by Israel to Judaize Jerusalem by pressuring the Israeli government to desist from further settlement activity in the city and its environs. The status of Jerusalem is emotive to both Palestinians and Israelis; Israel’s domination of the city would affect the outcome of future peace settlements. Its status must not be altered in any form or manner.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
