Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

3 Palestinians were shot and killed yesterday by Israeli forces as they crawled along the Gaza-Israel border wall. Israeli forces claimed that the men were carrying explosives, though news agency reports suggest that the men were unarmed. This latest violence has clouded the prospects for the much anticipated Sharon-Abbas summit, meant to be held tomorrow (Tuesday October 11th ).

While it is as yet unclear what repercussions this latest incident will have on the prospects for peace, it is clear that such acts of violence cannot continue to be carried out with impunity by the Israeli forces. Not only do these latest killings intensify the suffering of all Palestinians, and further dehumanize them, they also retard hopes for peace and mutual recognition between the sides.

MIFTAH condemns all such acts of violence, and urges the Israeli authorities, along with the international community, to pressure Israeli forces to obey at all times the laws of armed conflict, which do not permit the targeting of non-combatant civilians. MIFTAH further calls for the humanization of the people of Palestine, so that the victims of the latest acts of violence are mourned in a manner that honors their lives and their hopes and dreams. MIFTAH further extends its condolences and solidarity to the families of the three victims, and calls for a detailed enquiry into their deaths. Lastly, MIFTAH calls on the leaders of both sides to continue to prepare for bilateral talks; such acts of violence, though we condemn them wholeheartedly, cannot be allowed to retard the hopes for peace of two nations.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
