Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

JERUSALEM – On Tuesday November 22, the English daily newspaper ‘The Daily Mirror,’ uncovered a controversial story that caused great fury among press freedom organizations as well as human rights organizations.

The controversy surrounds details of a leaked British government memo classified as ‘Top Secret,’ in which the U.S president George W. Bush allegedly in a conversation with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, suggested that allied forces target (bomb) the Al Jazeera offices in Doha, Qatar. According to ‘The Daily Mirror,’ the conversation took place on April 16, 2004, during the height of the Iraq war.

If the report uncovered by the British daily is true, MIFTAH views this incident with great concern and sees it as setting a very dangerous precedent. As an organization functioning on the platform of Global Dialogue, MIFTAH is a fervent believer in the free flow of information and ideas.

Whether these reports are true or not, MIFTAH would like to remind members of the international community that Al Jazeera’s offices were previously targeted in Iraq in April 2003, claiming the life of the Jordanian journalist Tarek Ayoub. The same took place in 2001 when Al Jazeera’s offices were bombed in Kabul.

MIFTAH lends its voice of support to the call raised by organizations such as; the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Sans Frontières, International Federation of Journalists and the International Press Institute, for the clarifications both from the U.S administration and the British Government, about this incident.

Finally, MIFTAH would like to remind all parties concerned that press freedom is enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 19, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10th 1948. The article stipulates that, “[e]veryone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression: this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
