Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

September 28, 2002 marks the second anniversary of the Palestinian Intifada or uprising against the long standing Israeli occupation, and the Palestinians are still subjected to Israeli attempts at humiliating, subjugating and demoralizing them. Restrictions on mobility are becoming more stringent than ever. Strict curfew has bottled up the majority of the Palestinians in the West Bank towns, villages and camps. Governmental buildings are leveled and residential areas, schools and hospitals are targeted with increasing ferocity.

On this day, the Palestinians remember the 1723 Palestinian martyrs 500 of whom are children, and the 110 assassinated political figures and the tens of thousands thrust in Israeli jails either sentenced without trial or held in prolonged detention. The Palestinians also live the brutal reality of the 25,000 injured and disabled who were the targets of Israeli machine guns, helicopters and tanks.

Two years have gone by, and now the Palestinian officials are amid some heated discussions on many issues like reform and the initiation of the position of a prime minister with the elections due to take place in the near future. They also debate the different means of resistance with non-violence finding an audience among the nationals and internationals. The latest opinion polls have shown a 44% support for a two-state solution and a 30% support for a bi-national state. The overwhelming majority of the Palestinians remain focused in their vision for a peaceful and just future. All Palestinians are united in their quest for freedom and justice through resistance against the occupation and guaranteed by the 1993 Declaration of Principles.

Ariel Sharon's promise to his people to bring "security to Israel," by breaking the will of the Palestinian people and forcing them to submission has remained unfulfilled especially that the will of the Palestinians can never be broken .If Israel's right wing Prime Minister and war general has not been able to break the will of the Palestinian people then who or what will? It is justice and only justice that can heel the sore wounds of the Palestinians who have been living under occupation for more than 35 years now. The Palestinians are now determined more than ever to regain their rights and live in freedom and peace.

As the Palestinians enter the third year of the Intifada and the 36th year of occupation, their march to freedom will continue for they have nothing else to lose .Sharon's promise to bring security to Israel remains ineffective for he lacks the will and the vision to come up with a solid political solution. The international community is becoming more aware now of the source of instability and the circle of violence in the region. It has come to realize that occupation is that source and with the removal of that oppressive occupation, the source of injustice will be eliminated . The Palestinians remain determined in their resistance to occupation, discrimination and oppression. "When you are right you can not be too radical, when you are wrong, you can not be too conservative." (Martin Luther King)
