The Church of the Nativity, one of Christianity's most sacred shrines, was declared by Israeli forces a closed military zone. Israeli troops cordoned off the square around the church, known as Manger Square, and banned Christian worshipers from attending service. An armored vehicle aimed its machine gun towards the entrance of the church. These actions by the Israeli forces are disheartening to the thousands of Christians who had hoped to celebrate Christmas in peace; sadly, it seems this season's greetings will be anything but merry as 28,000 Bethlehemites face an indefinite strict curfew and life under the harsh and brutal Israeli occupation forces.

With a curfew imposed since Friday, Israeli forces did not waste time declaring the city closed to journalists as they demolished six Palestinian homes, detained over 30 Palestinians and terrorized the residents. Several homes, among them a four storey residential building, were occupied and transferred into military observation points, forcing dozens of inhabitants out or into a single room in their own houses. While vacating the families from their own homes, Israeli soldiers pointed their M-16 machine guns towards young children simply to frighten them. Israeli troops then carried out house-to-house searches vandalizing furniture in the process. A mosque and a school were also raided. According to the Land Defense Committee, the Israeli forces confiscated 17,000m˛ of agricultural land in al-Jaba'a village, west of Bethlehem for the benefit of the Israeli electricity company.

The US did not oppose Israel's latest operation, dubbed "Chain Reaction", but urged "the Israelis, in the course of their operations, to keep in mind the consequences of their actions, to complete these operations as quickly as possible and to take steps to avoid further civilian casualties", in a statement given by US State Department spokesman Philip Reeker. Of course Israel has no intention of listening and Mofaz, the new Israeli defense minister, said that Israeli forces "face no restrictions on the depth of the operation, its duration or its strength." Query what the consequences are that Israel must keep in mind, as the world silently sits by while Israeli soldiers pushed, beat and dragged to the ground Christian worshippers who were attempting to attend service in defiance of the curfew.

Ironically, an Israeli army spokesman claimed that "the idea is to have a completely safe atmosphere by Christmas so that tourists can come without fear of a terrorist attack." This remark was made as Israeli forces shot in the back a British UN senior official, Iain John Hook, 54, in Jenin refugee camp on Saturday. Mr. Hook, who had been overseeing the reconstruction of the Jenin camp that was razed in an Israeli invasion in April, was armed with only a cell phone he was using to try to evacuate UN staff, when he was killed. Moreover, Israeli forces blocked an ambulance from coming to Mr. Hook's rescue. While Palestinians showed up in big numbers with flowers to express their condolences, Netanyahu was attempting to put a spin on the killing by claiming that "Palestinian gunman had hidden behind the UN compound seeking to create more casualties." However, a spokesman for the UN relief agency, Paul McCann, said "our preliminary findings are completely contrary to what the Israeli army said. The compound is quite small; at no point did we lose control of the site. There were no militants on the site." Israel was recently embarrassed when it falsely claimed that "Jewish worshippers were massacred" in the Hebron ambush. However, Israel and especially Netanyahu continue to spin fables that the UN has deemed "incredibly incorrect".

Israel claims that it protects and respects the right to free exercise of religion, yet it has prevented Muslims from reaching the al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan. Israeli forces have hindered any attempt by Muslims to celebrate this most important month by occupying the entire West Bank and imposing the strictest curfews. Now Christians face anything but a Merry Christmas, as the Israeli army occupies the Church of the Nativity. It appears Israel only respects and protects illegal Israeli settler's rights to free exercise of religion while suppressing the rights of all others.
