Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

At a time when the Palestinians are being relegated to the sideline, overlooked and denied, the Palestinian National Football Team, a symbol of independence, is more determined than ever to keep hope alive. Although it has become increasingly difficult to practice and remain focused, the members of the team are managing to proudly represent Palestine in international football matches.

The Palestinian National Team has participated in international matches since 1992 and was recognized by FIFA in 1998 and ranked 151 among the 203 countries in FIFA's world ranking. The Polish 47-year-old coach Andrzej Wisniewski was hired by West Asian Football Foundation to help the Palestinian team. Avoiding politics, Wisniewski remarked, "Life in Gaza is difficult." However, being proud of his team, he added, "I want to stay with the team because I think they are fantastic."

Wisniewski was yet to meet half of his team who were unable to travel due to Israeli restrictions and curfews imposed on the West Bank towns and cities which they come from. In fact, it is even extremely difficult to travel from one section in Gaza to another, and many local players are forced to miss practice due to incursions, checkpoints and sometimes death. Statistics now indicate that more than 130 Palestinian athletes have been killed by Israeli troops since Sept. 2000.

Many international footballers are privileged jet setters, but the Palestinian midfielder Jamal Al Houly became homeless on August 2 after the Israeli army demolished his home. Al-Houly lives in Rafah Refugee Camp and his home was amongst hundreds of homes razed by Israeli bulldozers. Describing the manner in which the Israelis approached, he said, "They came at 2 am, and told us by loudspeaker: 'Stay and you will die, leave and you will live.' We fled in minutes. There was no time to retrieve my medals from international tournaments." Just ahead of Arab championships in December, homeless Al- Houly expresses optimism: "I lost the medal, but this will not prevent me from trying to win a new one, perhaps even a better one."

The Palestinian National Football Team is broke and has also lost FIFA development contributions. The stadium FIFA was set to build in Palestine has suffered numerous delays since Sept. 2000. Nevertheless, FIFA has agreed that Palestinian football players could be sought overseas, given the political and social turmoil in occupied Palestine. Palestinians with dual nationalities are able to play for Palestine but can not play for any other nation. With a population of over 6 million refugees world wide, the Palestinians are being gladly recruited from Chile, Argentina, Peru, Honduras and Mexico. "Sure I'm interested in the idea. It is an international side and it would be a nice idea to participate in it. We know that Palestinians live in a flashpoint area and need our help. It is a door that has opened," said midfielder Pablo Abdala from Argentine.

With names like Pablo Abdala- an Argentinian who plays for club Cobreloa- brothers Roberto and Fabian Bishara, and Roberto Kettlun- who all play for Chilean first division club Palestino, the Palestinian team is colorful and unique. Coach Nicola Hadweh, a Chilean with Palestinian parents, has joined the Palestinian dream team and is rubbing off some of his Latin enthusiasm and passion which has elevated the team's spirit. "Our main goal is to reach the finals in Germany and become the world champions," said Hadweh half-jokingly. "There wouldn't be much point taking up this gauntlet without having ambitious objectives. Palestinian players form Latin America can help us there is no doubt about that," he added.

This initiative by the Palestinians is yet another example of Palestinian steadfastness and determination not to be undermined. Due to the lack of funds, the Palestinian players are average full-time employees working as policeman, laborers or construction workers. They are the Ambassadors of Palestine- a nation, an entity, and a dream. They are proud, hardworking and poor and for that they have already become victorious. They have won international respect and, more importantly, they are the real heroes who are fighting to keep the dream alive.
