Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Perhaps overly sentimental, most around New Years day take the time to reflect on past mistakes, to ponder about a more hopeful future, to be kind and show mercy. But not Sharon! The "man of peace" would have none of that, rather he views this time as the perfect opportunity to step up his unrelenting and vicious assault on the Palestinian people, allowing the army a free hand to arbitrarily detain, kill, beat, burn down and terrorize everything in their path.

For too long there was consistent criticism that Sharon had no plans for a peaceful and lasting solution with the Palestinians and, despite the increasing support he has received from the Bush administration, many criticized his policies for delving the Middle East conflict into more violence. Make no mistake; Sharon has a secret plan, one perhaps he shares only with his closest friends, such as defense minister Mofaz, one that envisions Palestinian people so broken, demoralized and weakened that they will accept to live under occupation. Implementing this plan naturally means increasing the suffering of Palestinians.

Ariel Sharon ordered the army to intensify its attacks and step up it much condemned policy of extra judicial killings and it operations to arrest Palestinians, using any means necessary to achieve these goals, in what he refers to as "preventative war." As a result, more than 17 Palestinians have been killed since Christmas, including three children under the age of 11 who were shot in the head while coming home from end of semester exams or playing in the back garden. A 17-year-old Palestinian was beaten to death by Israeli soldiers in Hebron for violating curfew, which coincidentally has been strictly imposed all over the West Bank. A school in Tulkarem was terrorized by Israeli army who ordered the students out of the classrooms and beat them and their principal. The terror continues unabated.

Sharon hoping to boost his image even further has also taken up campaign of destroying as many Palestinian homes as possible, thereby creating thousands of homeless Palestinians and augmenting the already devastating humanitarian disaster in the occupied territories. Over the past week Israeli forces demolished seven commercial shops in Housan, west of Bethlehem and two homes in Hebron. Reports of Israeli forces razing houses in Zawata, Nablus, have also been confirmed. Moreover, homes in Rafah, Gaza, are being destroyed as part of a plan to expand the borders by 150 meters into Rafah refugee camp; hundreds of homes as a result have been threatened with demolition. More than 255 homes have been destroyed in Rafah since September 28, 2000.

With Sharon's plan bordering on the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and such war criminals as Mofaz by helping him execute it, the only sure thing this New Year will bring is Sharon's gift of war, violence and bloodshed. Sadly the thought that lingers from this past year is that hope and history are doomed never to intertwine.
