Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Despite all obstacles, Palestinians are taking hold of their future and tackling issues of grave concern in their society head on. For long, the realization within Palestinian society to reform the political, judicial, administrative, economic and constitutional systems and to seek justifiable methods of resistance that promote rather than denigrate the Palestinian cause has been fostering. The Israeli onslaught has sidelined past efforts, but the resolve of the Palestinian people to carve out a democratic and viable society in direct defiance of Sharon's efforts to the contrary has never been stronger.

Several meetings have taken place in Cairo in an effort to establish Palestinian unity, put an end to internal chaos and address the halting of suicide attacks. Egypt presented a proposal which calls on all militant Palestinian organizations to cease operations inside Israel proper. The Palestinian Authority has responded positively, with Yasser Arafat endorsing the Egyptian-sponsored plan which includes Palestinian aspirations for an independent state. The strength in unifying to present a credible and clear Palestinian vision for the future has proved to be an irresistible stimulant in bringing the differing Palestinian factions together for talks.

While a lot needs to be done to fully democratize Palestinian society, results of the serious commitment to introduce sweeping reforms began to appear with British Foreign Minister Straw praising Palestinian progress on financial reform. Palestinians participating in the London conference via a video link, as Israel barred them from physically attending, promised to present a draft of the new Palestinian constitution to participants in the next two weeks and to concentrate more on introducing the rule of law in a comprehensive way inside the Occupied Territories, by forming an independent judiciary. With Britain taking the lead, given the American administration's apparent abandonment of the conflict and preoccupation with Iraq, the drive for reform appears to be steadfastly progressing and undercutting Israel's attempts to hold the peace process hostage to 'security' issues.

Sadly, Israel maintains its supercilious attitude, claiming that all Palestinian efforts are just a charade. This is somewhat ironic, given the election scandals and corruption Sharon and his right wing Likud party find themselves embroiled in, and the fact that Israel has not missed an opportunity to hinder Palestinian reforms. Perhaps, therefore, it is appropriate to remember that the greatest obstacle to Palestinian reform is Israel's ongoing occupation. The international community's concentration on aiding Palestinians in their efforts to democratize and abandon all forms of extremism must not become "the tree that hides the forest" of Israel's brutal oppression of the Palestinian people.
