As we commemorate the events that took place on that day, Israel’s brutal occupation rages on. Israeli forces have turned Palestinian cities into large-scale prisons, worst of which is the maximum-security facility known as the Gaza Strip. Palestinians are hunted down and killed as part of the target practice young trigger-happy Israeli soldiers go through. 2,222 Palestinians have been killed over the last 30 months, 470 of them were children aged 17 and under. Palestinians homes continue to be demolished, with countless Palestinians being made homeless. Child malnutrition levels are among the worst in the world as Israel continues to hinder the work of aid organizations while maintaining its chokehold on the Palestinian economy. Israel’s illegal policies of land confiscation and settlement expansion continue; since 1967, Israel has confiscated more than 750,000 acres of land from the 1.5 million acres comprising the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Furthermore, in March 2003, plans to expropriate more than 15,000 dunums (15 sq. km) of Palestinian-owned land to construct Israel’s ‘security’ fence are underway in what a report to the UN describes as a “creeping annexation” and what Palestinians fear are Sharon’s plans to create de fact borders that establish an unviable Palestine with, in his own government’s words, “some attributes of sovereignty.” While Palestinian Land Day is a day for remembrance, it is also a reminder to Israel and the rest of the world that Palestinians will continue to fight for independence, a dream that will not subside no matter what Israel and its Zionist backers attempt.
