Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

While the shameless military aggression against Iraq continues, so far claiming hundreds of innocent lives, and while the world (to a large extent) is outraged at this blatant US-British attempt to secure their strategic and economic interests in the region at all cost (under the pretext of “liberating” the Iraqi people from Saddam Hussein’s undemocratic regime), Israel is actively (and successfully it seems) attempting to impose its will on the US administration’s efforts to find a possible solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The state of Israel, the US Congress, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) are coordinating a political campaign to influence US President George W. Bush to take an even more favourable stance towards Israel and a position that more closely resembles Ariel Sharon’s own agenda. The Roadmap is being tailored to fit Israel’s exclusive “vision of peace;” namely to sustain its military occupation of the Palestinian territories, in new ways, shapes and forms!

Ostentatious remarks by Ariel Sharon’s aid Dov Weisglass earlier this week clearly indicate that Israel will pursue its traditional policy of arrogance, threats and arm-twisting regarding the Roadmap: “We will submit 15 remarks on the roadmap to the United States and if we find that a refusal of our proposed changes could jeopardize Israel’s security, we will not accept it.” Commenting on Israel’s demands concerning “…the dismantlement and disarmament of terrorist organizations, and the creation of new Palestinian security services which are not implicated in terrorism” Weisglass said “…on these issues we will not make any concessions and, if we have to, we will leave the negotiating table and come home.”

These blunt positions, which fail to even consider the reality of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian people, are being declared simultaneously with Zionist efforts on Capitol Hill to sway Bush to accept Israel’s terms of the Roadmap, which is due to be published as soon as the new Palestinian Prime Minister, Abu-Mazen, forms his government.

Meanwhile, both Republicans and Democrats have surprisingly voiced their dissatisfaction with Bush’s earlier statements concerning the Roadmap, claiming that, by embracing the plan, Bush is “…undercutting Israel.” They are clearly pushing the administration to adopt a more direct pro-Israel position, apparently, downplaying criticism that the US is too closely allied with Ariel Sharon’s government.

It must be cautioned that such efforts by the pro-Israel lobby in the US to impose Israel’s terms upon the US administration, and Congress’s unquestionable support for them, will jeopardize the real prospects of a just, comprehensive, and lasting settlement of the conflict.

Any attempt to impose a peace settlement that fails to take into consideration the legality of the Palestinian cause is bound to backfire; it will fuel more anger and frustration, and ultimately, lead to more bloodshed on both sides.

The US must finally understand that only an end to Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories, and the dismantlement of all Jewish settlements, will bring a real end to the conflict. Equally, the US must realise that without a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian refugees issue, 4.6 million Palestinians (of 3 generations) will continue to languish under the most brutal conditions, and will continue to suffer from the endless effects of uprooting and displacement.

Perhaps what is needed at this time of insanity is a reminder that ‘liberation’ is neither dropped by B52 bombers nor imposed on the oppressed by the political instruments of the oppressor. It is achieved through the human realisation of truth and justice.
