Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Israelis finally agreed to the ‘roadmap,’ but unlike the Palestinian side the Israeli government’s reluctant acceptance is subject to a list of fourteen ‘concerns,’ providing an abundance of loopholes, which will allow Israel to wiggle out of a peace agreement while continuing to create realities on the ground such as build up and expansion of illegal settlements, the erection of over 200 outposts in recent months as well as the so-called ‘security-wall’ that is being built on Palestinian land. This ‘apartheid wall’ aims to separate Palestinians living in the West Bank into 10 Bantustans, funny enough or maybe sadly enough, this is the same number of Bantustans the Apartheid regime had created in South Africa.

The US has accepted 12 of 14 reservations refusing only two ‘concerns.’ The first is the removal of references to the Arab peace initiative which offers Israel peace and normalization with all its neighbors as long as they end their occupation of Gaza and West Bank including east Jerusalem. The second ‘concern’ of the Israelis that was refused by America had to do with the Palestinian right of return. UN resolutions and international law guarantee the Palestinians that right for they were expelled from their homes and replaced with Jewish residents from all over the world. The nature of the exclusively Jewish ‘democratic’ state (Israel) has no room for non-Jews and is not willing to compromise.

In an act of sheer defiance, the Israeli government while finally accepting the ‘roadmap,’ drafted a resolution which denies the Palestinians their right of return regardless of what their good friend America says. This is all taking place before the actual implementation starts from the Israeli side.

The Palestinian side has long accepted the plan implementing a good chunk of it unilaterally. The Palestinians have many concerns and reservations but stating them will give Israel yet another excuse to prolong actions demanded by the international peace making community. All the Palestinians are asking for is a system of monitoring and a verification mechanism to include arbitration and intervention that would hold Israel accountable. The Palestinians are demanding timelines and tangible actions by the Israelis who have been instigating hate against, not only the Palestinians, but also their Arab neighbors in general.

Israel should prepare its people for peace. This can only come through recognition of recent history in which the Palestinians were forced out of their homes and land without compensation or recognition. Israel should educate its people about the Palestinian rights in accordance to international law and should address Palestinian security needs. Instead of making patronizing statements which dehumanize the Palestinians and acting like the judge as well as the foe, Israel should conduct a wide spread campaign to show their people what it means to live under occupation and how the Palestinians have suffered enough on the hands of the only occupation in this world.

1967 borders, 22% of historical Palestine, is the Palestinians faithful compromise. It is a solution that has been widely accepted; however, it can disburse only if Israel is truly willing to honor this solution and acknowledge what has been expropriated since 1967. Israel is no position to have ‘concerns’ for it is the mighty power in control of the situation and it is up to Israel whether to make it or break it. So far, the mood and attitude has not shown that Israel is seriously seeking an evenhanded peace making process that would lead to the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. There is a price to pay but how much is Israel willing to dole out for the sake of a just peace?
