Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

“Truce” is the kind of word that almost everybody suffering in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is waiting to hear. It is the kind of word that portends an end to hostilities and a coming peace. But the truce currently being negotiated does not encompass these meanings. A truce is defined as “a suspension of fighting especially of considerable duration by agreement of opposing forces.” The peculiar thing about discussions this week concerning the impending truce from Palestinian militant groups is that they are not about the suspension of fighting on both sides, but just one – the Palestinians.

Israel is not in the process of ceasefire negotiations to generate a formal announcement – in line with the road map – to end violence against Palestinians. They are not mimicking the efforts of the Palestinians, who in negotiations being ushered along by none other than Fatah activist Marwan Barghouti from the Israeli jail he is imprisoned in, are on the verge of declaring a three-month end to attacks on Israelis. The closest Israel has come is to say that it will end violence, except in the cases of “ticking bomb” militants. Openly announcing that it will continue its assassinations policy, which is illegal under international law in the first place and responsible for numerous civilian deaths in the second, shows little good faith on the part of the Israelis for a peace with the Palestinians.

Moreover, Sharon and his partner-in-occupation George W. Bush are now taking things one step further, stating that a formal ceasefire declaration from the Palestinians is not enough, and that Hamas must be utterly dismantled. Bush shows little to no trust in the Palestinians efforts to satisfy the demands of the U.S. and Israel. "It's one thing to make a verbal agreement," Bush said. "But in order for there to be peace in the Middle East, we must see organizations such as Hamas dismantled." But there was no quote reported in the news from Bush scolding Sharon, such as: “It’s one thing to say you will abide by a ceasefire, but a declaration to continue assassinating Palestinians is a clear violation of a ceasefire before it has even started, and we must see such policies dismantled.”

In the meantime, Sharon has not yet commented on the Palestinian truce, expected to be announced in advance of the arrival of Condoleeza Rice this weekend, except to say that it is Israel’s military might that has proved to the Palestinians that violence doesn’t pay. As the world waits with anticipation to see the results of discussions leading to a truce by Palestinian factions, the world continues to absolve Israel and Ariel “Might Makes Right” Sharon of any complicity in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
