Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Tragically, while the Israeli government continues to inflict the worst kind of aggression on the Palestinian people (women, men, and children), the US seems to complement the agony of injustice with the adoption of distorted views, turning a blind eye to the truth and reality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Despite the Palestinian leadership's official condemnation of the incident, the US is indirectly holding President Arafat responsible for the Karine-A ship, thus adopting Israeli allegations without questioning (or taking consideration of) the facts.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell publicly backed Israel's demand that Palestinian President Arafat arrest those responsible for trying to smuggle weapons aboard a ship in the Red Sea. Asked what he thought of Israel's demolition of more than 70 Palestinian homes in Rafah (Gaza Strip), Powell said "Israelis are responding to this incident of smuggling…It's a defensive action on their part." He also stated "It's a response the Israelis have taken as a result of this latest provocation and I have no comment. It's in their field."

It must be cautioned (Mr. Powell) that "their field" is dominated by a government of war that lacks any kind of political agenda; a government that continues to induce the most volatile provocations to sustain its military agenda and "justify" its use of brute force against a captive and civilian Palestinian population.

Powell's words seem to confirm that the US is willfully limiting its interpretation of developments in the region to the Israeli version and Israeli spin machine. Even worse, the US is allowing Israel to set the agenda for its envoy Anthony Zinni, hence taking the liberty to set US foreign policy; Zinni's expected visit to the region has been put on hold until Sharon's government deems it "appropriate" in light of the expected (and provoked) retaliation to the latest developments (Israel's demolition of Palestinian homes in Gaza and Jerusalem, and its assassination of a Palestinian political activist in the West Bank.)

The US attitude towards the Palestinian people and leadership is leading the region into deeper levels of despair, tension, and conflict. The unbalanced equation between the Palestinians and the Israelis in the power corridors of the White House is a vital element in the conflict that must be dealt with in order to prevent a tragic explosion and all-out war in the region.

Sharon's exploitation of the "war against terrorism" analogy should not be blindly adopted by the US government; Israel's actions against the Palestinians-political assassinations, home demolition, strangulation, collective punishment (to mention a few)-should not escape without judgment.

Clearly, there is an urgent need for the US to reassess its policies towards Israel; to weigh the facts and make pragmatic policy decisions, free of rhetoric and not subjected to the Israeli distortion of reality.

Finally, the US, and the international community as a whole, should take into serious consideration that neither the timing nor the impact of Israel's latest aggression against the Palestinians is coincidence; a massive campaign of home demolition and the assassination of a key Palestinian political activist are premeditated acts of provocation that blatantly seek to suppress any initiatives for calm in the region, most notably the efforts of US envoy Zinni.
