Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

At the heart of Israel’s right wing government, we are confronted with a radical Zionist ideology that is based on exclusion and rejection to Palestinian rights; an agenda that accommodates no room for political discourse with the Palestinians. Unfortunately, while this ‘political force’ has, arguably, been laid to rest in the post-Oslo era, it has reemerged with significant momentum after Ariel Sharon’s rise to power in February 2001.

Amid the rising tensions in the region, and with the most radical of Israel’s radicals in a state of unprecedented determination to destroy the “peace process,” all chances for an eventual end to the conflict seem shattered beyond hope.

To even contemplate the possibility of a Palestinian-Israeli political solution during Sharon’s term in office is nothing short of political na?vety. General Sharon has no political agenda!

The policies of the current Israeli government, from right wing hawks to leftist apologists, are not only dragging the entire region into the abyss of all-out war, but are equally manipulating the hard-line stances of Israel’s extremists to protect the government of occupation, through the laws of occupation, for the sake of occupation.

Sharon’s election rhetoric revolved around the illusion that he, and only he, can bring “peace AND security” to the Israeli people. Predictably, he was unable to deliver. The militaristic mentality of Sharon, thus his lack of political vision, has taken the ongoing conflict to deeper levels of disaster. His failure to even realize that only an end to Israeli occupation will pave the way for peace is a tragic reinforcement of the ‘occupier-occupied’ formula.

Sharon’s promises of “no-compromise” and his Machiavellian approach in dealing with the Palestinians only reaffirm the (delusional) stances of Israel’s hardliners; the denial of Israel’s occupation, the use of brute military power as a means of dealing with the “ungrateful Palestinian natives,” and the portrayal of ALL Palestinians (including children) as a “threat” to Israel’s security, thus making them “legitimate targets” of Israel’s assassination policy.

Ultimately, such perceptions (or misperceptions) are accompanied with the slur of racism and hatred. Israeli officials, ranging from ultra-orthodox Jews to leftist “liberals,” have taken every opportunity to slander the Palestinian people.

Obadia Yosef (spiritual leader of the Ultra-Orthodox Shas party) Moshe Katsav (Israel’s President), and Avraham Burg (Israeli Knesset Speaker), are among several Israeli leaders who have publicly, and shamelessly, described Palestinians as “crocodiles,” “beasts walking on two legs,” “people from a different galaxy,” and most recently as “…people you do not want your daughter to get married to!”

The most dangerous forms of extremism, fundamentalism, and hatred are those which are induced and nurtured by the state itself; the tragedy lies deep in the hearts of Israel’s leaders.
