Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

This time, even the United States, Israel’s most loyal ally, has difficulty in finding any justification to Sharon’s limitless hostility and aggression towards the Palestinians. Monday’s incursion of Israeli forces into Palestinian-controlled territories in the Gaza Strip (Beit Hanoun) was met by harsh US criticism; the US described Israel's move as "excessive and disproportionate."

Inevitably, this unfamiliar US tone of condemnation towards Israel was soon followed by words of blame at the Palestinians; US Secretary of State, Mr. Colin Powell, firmly acknowledged that Israel’s actions had been “provoked” by the Palestinians, whom he stated, of course, must implement their commitment to renounce “terrorism.”

The saga ends with Israel’s “full withdrawal” from Beit Hanoun late on Tuesday, and life in the Palestinian territories goes back to “normal,” the daily Israeli strikes on residential Palestinian areas; military siege, economic strangulation, and starvation; political assassinations, abduction, and extra-judicial killings; and the familiar Israeli policy of brute force against an unarmed Palestinian population. Long gone are the ‘pre-September 28th, 2000’ days when Palestinians would call for Israel’s withdrawal to the June 1967 boundaries and the return of the Palestinian refugees; for the time being, it is a matter of mere daily survival. Israel has, yet again, succeeded in imposing a new reality of terror upon the Palestinians, whereby previous injustices may well be perceived as more favorable than present and future prospects.

Nevertheless, Sharon’s message to the Palestinians was made clear. His ostensible demonstration of power and his brief, yet powerfully exhibited, acquisition of territory underpin his militaristic vision of “peace and security” as well as his interpretation of reality in the Middle East. More importantly, Sharon’s message is one of threat, bullying, and harsh military oppression; his latest move is a desperate attempt to get the Palestinians on their knees, and to suppress their revolt against occupation and injustice.

Backed by the hawks of his right-wing government, disguised in the shadow of his deceptively dovish Israeli allies, and protected by the silence of the international community, General Ariel Sharon finds plenty of room to maneuver in, thus, dangerously broadening the peripheries of the ongoing conflict.
