Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

One can only hope (hypothetically) that Ariel Sharon’s recent unveiling of his plans for peace, should he become the new Israeli prime minister on February 7th, are nothing but ‘loudspeaker diplomacy’ at its best, facilitated by Barak in the hope that the Palestinians will be helplessly pressured to sign any agreement with him (Barak), before it is too late. However, such a conspiracy theory remains far-fetched.

Sharon’s “vision” for peace in the Middle East is a recipe for all-out war. If he is actually elected, and if he is actually willing to follow his words with deeds, then the region (including Israel) is doomed.

According to a recent article published in Ha’aretz Newspaper (18/1/2001) under the title “No more territory for PA if Sharon wins election,” Sharon is unwilling, under any circumstances, to 1-recognize east Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, 2-dismatle illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, 3-make further withdrawals from the West Bank (leaving the Palestinians with a mere 42%), and 4-recognize the Palestinian refugees’ right of return.

Sharon, however, is willing to 1-cooperate with the Palestinian Authority in the war against terrorism (arrest all those who reject Israeli occupation), 2-offer the Palestinians economic cooperation (use Palestinian workers as ‘cheap labour’ for Israel), 3-develop combined desalination projects with the Palestinians (maintain Israel’s illegal control and theft of water resources in Palestinian territories), and finally 4-cooperate with the Palestinian Authority on a joint program of “one nation to another” in which both sides will try to diminish incitement in their media and the education system (demand that the Palestinians wilfully negate their cultural, political, and legal rights, as well as distort their narrative).

Sharon’s plans for regional cooperation include keeping the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as a security zone.

For Ariel Sharon, the foundations of the Middle East peace process (UN Resolutions 242, 338 and the ‘land for peace’ equation) launched in Madrid in 1991, and adopted in Washington DC in 1993, are simply non-existent. His priorities revolve around the belief that “…peace is equally important to the Arabs, and therefore, the time has come to ask them, what are they willing to give up for peace.”

The inevitable conclusion is that Sharon not only wants to leave the Palestinians and the Arabs with nothing to give up, but also with nothing to look forward to. Such a peace bid by Sharon is an invitation to war.
